Carragher was provisionally suspended from his role as a pundit after footage emerged of him spitting towards a fan who goaded him after Manchester United defeated Liverpool 2-1, with the man's 14-year-old daughter also in the car.
Carragher was initially provisionally suspended by Sky and was removed from the Monday Night Football broadcast of Manchester City's victory at Stoke.
The broadcaster has now announced that Carragher will be suspended until the end of the Premier League season and that a review will take place before the start of next season to see whether Carragher will return.
The statement from Sky read: "Following an internal review, Sky has suspended Jamie Carragher for the remainder of the football season.
"Jamie has taken full responsibility for what has happened and we will ensure he gets the help he needs to guarantee something like this never happens again.
"Before the start of the next season we will sit down with Jamie to discuss whether he is ready to return to his role."
Carragher has gone on Sky News to apologise, has called the family and hopes to say sorry in person.
