Paper Round: Arsenal plan £60m triple swoop

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery could soon have made four signings for his new club as they prepare for life after Arsene Wenger. Arsenal are in negotiations for Lucas Torreira, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Torreira should cost £26m from Sampdoria, Bernd Leno will cost around £20m from Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund should accept a £16m fee for Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Paper Round's view: Emery already has Stephan Lichtsteiner and, importantly, he arrived on a free transfer. After spending around £60m it will then be up to Emery to raise funds through player sales. You would expect that at least one central defender and one midfielder would be let go, but it is not clear how Emery is going to significantly improve his squad if he is dependent on raising money from getting rid of some of the mediocrity that has stacked up.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has lined up two West Bromwich Albion players to strengthen his squad ahead of their Europa League games. He will bid £25m for Craig Dawson, the central defender, and striker Jay Rodriguez, the striker who started his career with Burnley. However, West Brom will likely ask for a higher transfer fee for the pair, and should West Brom sell Salomon Rondon - possibly to West Ham - that will merely strengthen their resolve.

Paper Round's view: Dawson is a steady central defender, but Rodriguez is altogether a more impressive player when he finds his top form. If Burnley could push through the deals for around £30m, then they would be getting a fair deal while West Brom would be getting a sizeable amount of money to refresh their squad with some younger talent - but they may prefer to attempt promotion with more experience.

Manchester United have received a boost as they look for a central defender. Jerome Boateng has said that he could leave Bayern Munich after years of success in Germany. The 29-year-old Germany international has played for Manchester City before, and Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said, "If a club comes to us and he says that he wants to join that club, then we will negotiate. But the offer has to be important."

Paper Round's view: Bayern are reasonable negotiators when it comes to letting players go - they allowed Bastian Schweinsteiger an easy path out for a small transfer fee to United a few years ago. However, Boateng is a player at the top of his game, and doesn't have the injury problems that Schweinsteiger was dealing with, so a transfer fee of at least £50m could be fairly demanded, and it is not clear how much money United are willing to spend this summer.

Chelsea are struggling to find a way to let Antonio Conte go without paying him around £9.5m in compensation. Conte has made it clear that unless a deal is agreed, he will happily return for pre-season training, despite it being clear that Chelsea are looking for his replacement. As Julen Lopetegui has joined Real Madrid, it has stopped the chance of a merry-go-round allowing for Conte to walk into another job, reducing Chelsea's compensation obligation.

Paper Round's view: It is looking as though Chelsea are being held back by whatever choice they now take. Even if they do appoint Maurizio Sarri, they have left it late to do transfer business with the World Cup to start today, and with an abridged Premier League transfer window. They must take action, and soon, in the transfer window, regardless of which manager they start the season with.
