United in talks for Kluivert

Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Ajax's forward Justin Kluivert. Jose Mourinho knows him, and his father Patrick from his time at Barcelona as a coach, and had kind words for him after the Europa League final in 2017. A fee of £10m plus add-ons is rumoured. Kluivert is just 18, made his debut at 17, and has already scored an impressive hat-trick against Roda JC.

Paper Round's view: Manchester United have tied down Mourinho to a long-term contract and appear happy to work with him in order to plan for longer than the next couple of seasons. Kluivert is one for the future and displays huge potential. While Juan Mata started for United yesterday against Huddersfield, he should be one of the players worried by the arrival of an exciting young wide foward.

Conte on the brink at Chelsea

Chelsea are considering removing current coach Antonio Conte from his post should they lose their game against Watford. Conte has 18 months left on his contract, but owner Roman Abramovich will think about sacking Conte in order to bring in ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, who is available after leaving them in the summer. Chelsea have failed to keep up with Manchester City this season, and lost 3-0 in midweek to Bournemouth.
Paper Round's view: Conte appears to be on borrowed time, and it would be no surprise to see him go in the summer. However, the chances of him being removed will probably only become meaningful if Abramovich believes that a top-four place is at risk. That isn't obviously the case yet, but Abramovich can be a capricious owner if he turns against his manager. As many have found out to their cost.

Arsenal enter race for Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez has gone AWOL from Leicester City after being denied a move to Manchester City in the winter transfer window, but that hasn't stopped the bigger clubs extending an interest. The clubs may make a summer move as they weigh up their options. Mahrez might cost around £60m, and as well as City, Arsenal are now interested in the player along with Manchester United and Chelsea.

Paper Round's view: Mahrez's refusal to play since the end of the transfer window marks out the player as one of limited commitment, but you can say the same of most players these days. For the bigger clubs, what they have seen is a relatively affordable player with a contract running out, and an effective winger who has already adjusted to the way football is played in the Premier League.

Napoli want to make Icardi their Ronaldo

Napoli have began talks with Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, having had one 55-million Euro bid turned down already. Napoli president said, "Icardi will score 40 a season here under Sarri and can become like Cristiano Ronaldo. I tried to negotiate signing him with his wife, who is an attractive and charming woman. I offered 55 million euros. He is a champion. Will they sell to Napoli? Why not?" Manchester United and Real Madrid also retain an interest.

Paper Round's view: Manchester United aren't in the hunt for a striker for the summer, but would find it hard to turn down a player of Icardi's quality were he available. Real and Napoli could both use a new Ronaldo figure, and his regular goalscoring would help Napoli finally replace Edinson Cavani as a lead striker. Inter Milan's new owners would probably prefer a sale abroad than to strengthen one of their domestic rivals.
