Football news - Dramatic Doherty winner sends Wolves into top half
Updated 09/12/2018 at 18:36 GMT
Premier League, St James' Park - Newcastle 1 (Perez 23') Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 (Jota 17', Doherty 90+4')
A dramatic stoppage time winner from Matt Doherty saw Wolves beat Newcastle 2-1 on Sunday and pushed them into the top ten.
Diogo Jota fired Wolves into a 17th minute lead with his second goal in as many games, with Wolves looking to build on their midweek win over Chelsea.
However, that lead lasted just six minutes, with Ayoze Perez heading Newcastle level. Only two teams in Europe’s top five leagues have scored more headed goals than Newcastle this season.
DeAndre Yedlin’s clumsy red card gave Wolves a numerical advantage, but it looked like Newcastle had done enough to hang on for a point, only for Doherty to snatch all three points right at the death, inflicting a seventh home league defeat of the season on Newcastle.
The result sees Wolves climb back into the top half, with Newcastle finishing the weekend in 15th.
TALKING POINT
Did Yedlin deserve his red card? Yedlin’s dismissal was all his own doing, but was he actually last man? Having been caught in possession, he decided the only way to stop Jota was to pull him down. There is no question that it was a foul, but would Jamaal Lascelles have got across to cover? Rafa Benitez certainly thought so on the Newcastle bench.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Diogo Jota. Having waited for so long to get off the mark in the Premier League before his midweek goal against Chelsea, Jota did not have to wait too long for his second. Then, with Newcastle seemingly on course for a point, it was Jota’s direct running that lead to the winner.

KEY MOMENTS
17’ - GOOOOOALLLLL!!!!! Newcastle 0-1 Wolves. Out of nowhere Wolves lead through Jota! All too easy for Wolves. Helder Costa clips a cross into the middle, Jamaal Lascelles gets caught under it, allowing Jota time to bring the ball down on his chest before volleying home. Woeful defending.
23’ - GOOOOOOOALLLLLL!!!!! Newcastle 1-1 Wolves. Incredible scenes as Ayoze Perez equalises. Rondon fires a free kick for the top corner, it looks to be heading in, but the ball thunders down off the crossbar. It comes back out to Rondon, who clips a glorious cross back into the dangerzone for Perez to head home.
57’ - RED CARD! Yedlin makes catastrophic error to earn himself a straight red card. Yedlin turned back inside, but was caught in possession by Jota, who was in the clear, Yedlin pulled him back, and was adjudged to be the last man by referee Mike Dean. An awful error of judgement could have just Newcastle the match.
80’ - SAVE! Wolves again counter at pace, Jota feeds Doherty, who fires for goal first time, but Dubravka flies across to palm the ball away.
90+4’ - GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Newcastle 1-2 Wolves. Heartbreak for Newcastle as Doherty heads home to win it at the death for Wolves. Rafa Benitez cannot believe it. Jota carried it a long way, fired for goal, Dubravka made the save, but Doherty reacted first to head the ball into the empty net. Jubilation on the Wolves bench.
