Football news - Jose Mourinho restrained in late Stamford Bridge fracas

Jose Mourinho had to be restrained by his backroom staff and security after a Chelsea staff member provoked him seconds after the home side had rescued a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League.

Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni confronted the former Blues coach after Ross Barkley had tucked away Chelsea's equaliser. The goal came in the final minute of six added to a lively encounter at Stamford Bridge that saw a Anthony Martial double cancel out Antonio Rudiger's first-half opener.

As the Chelsea technical area celebrated wildly, Ianni - who later apologised to the United manager - ran towards Mourinho and punched the air in front of him before celebrating in front of the Portuguese coach.

The taunting nature of the celebration did not go down well with Mourinho, who immediately bounded out of his seat as he was hauled back while trying to confront Sarri's assistant.

There was bad blood among several players deep into injury time while Mourinho was mocked by the home fans as he raised three fingers to the sky, reminding them of the three Premier League crowns he brought to the club during two spells between 2004 to 2015.

"I don't think (I got the respect back)," said Mourinho on Sky Sports. "The reaction of the fans is up to them...what happened was with Sarri's assistant. Sarri came to me, and said he would resolve it internally.

His assistant then came to me, and apologised to me. It is over. He apologised and it is over.

He later added on the BBC: "It is not my reaction, it is Sarri's assistant. He was very impolite but Sarri took care of the situation. They have both apologised to me, I accept. For me, the story is over.

"Don't do what everyone does and say 'it's Mourinho who does things.' I don't know his name, I don't need to know. Everything is fine."

Chelsea maintain their unbeaten start to the season and go top of the table on 21 points, a point clear of Manchester City, who host Burnley later on Saturday. Manchester United remain eighth position in the standings, seven points behind Chelsea.

"A fantastic match, a very undeserved result for us but that is football. We were the best team, even in the first half when we were losing," said Mourinho.

"We were in control, tactically. The result is really unfair for us. We conceded from two set-pieces, but that is a way to score goals and you have to be able to defend against that.

Anthony Martial is improving, he is doing different things than before. He is a more complete player than before but he needs to improve. He has a huge talent and he wants it, which is a good thing. The team as a team was really good.
