Liverpool keen on Sancho

Jurgen Klopp has praised Jadon Sancho’s decision to leave Manchester City in order to join Borussia Dortmund, and admitted he had an interest in the player but was unable to sign him. The Mirror reports that Liverpool could be in with a chance of finally bringing him to the club, because Dortmund are happy to sell to English clubs. The 18-year-old is also attracting attention from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Paper Round’s view: Sancho has demonstrated at Dortmund that Pep Guardiola was probably wrong not to fast-track him into the first team at Manchester City, but that is not an easy judgement to make at the time. Now though, he could be an excellent performer on the right wing for any of the big Premier League clubs and at £100 million, is affordable to only the biggest sides.

Wolves to tie down Saiss

Wolverhampton Wanderers are preparing for next season by extending the contracts of some of their squad. Matt Doherty and captain Conor Coady have both sign new deals to stay at Molineux, and the latest in line to commit his future will be Romain Saiss. The 28-year-old Moroccan is an important senior figure at the club, and Nuno Espirito Santo is ready to focus on the future, report the Telegraph.

Paper Round’s view: Wolves and Santo have done an exceptional job of making sure they are safe in their first season in the Premier League, and the hardest thing from this position is to improve rather than stagnate. Signing the best players to new contracts gives them a base to build upon, and given the riches available to them, any weak links will be addressed in the summer transfer window.

Real on verge of Militao transfer

Real Madrid are on the cusp of agreeing a deal for Porto central defender Eder Militao. Spanish newspaper Marca report that the only thing from making the agreement official is for the 21-year-old player to put pen to paper on a transfer which will earn the Portuguese side 50 million euros.

Paper Round’s view: Marca are often said to have links with Real Madrid, so if they are reporting with confidence that a deal is done for Militao, then that could come as a blow to Manchester United, who were regularly linked with the player when Jose Mourinho was boss. For Real, it is possible that the player is seen as a long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos, who is likely coming towards the end of his time with the Champions League winners.

Arsenal prepare Banega bid

Arsenal are preparing to restart efforts to bring Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega to the club, believes the Mirror. The 30-year-old Argentine international was linked with a winter move to Unai Emery’s club, but failed to transfer. Arsenal could not afford to activate his £17 million release clause but will have the cash available in the summer for a player who is seen as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.

Paper Round’s view: Banega is no worse a player than Ramsey, and for £17 million he could hold down the position for a couple of seasons on wages far less than the Welshman had been demanding. He is, though, an unspectacular player and so Emery will need to identify other players to help them kick on in his second season at the Emirates.
