Tottenham Hotspur thumped Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park in the Premier League to move within two points of Manchester City and six points of pace-setters Liverpool at the top of the table.
Everton took the lead through Theo Walcott on 21 minutes, but Tottenham strolled to a 3-1 advantage heading into the half time interval after strikes from Heung-Min Son, Dele Alli and Harry Kane.
Christian Eriksen added a fourth with a smart volley just three minutes into the second period, and while Gylfi Sigurdsson cut the arrears just a few minutes later, there was to be no fightback as Kane and Son added a further goal apiece to confirm Tottenham’s vast superiority.
The result leaves Tottenham in third place, on 42 points, just two shy of champions Manchester City while struggling Everton remain in 11th in 24 points after 18 matches. It will be a good Christmas for Spurs.

TALKING POINT - Can Spurs win the title this season?

It’s widely assumed that the Premier League title race is between just two teams, Liverpool and Manchester City, this season. However, Spurs have crept up behind those two, with this result moving them to within touching distance of the pace-setters. So can Spurs finally break through their glass ceiling and win the title? On this basis, there’s no reason to believe that they can’t.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Heung-Min Son (Spurs)

There were a number of standout performers for Spurs. Kane was exceptional, as was Alli before he was withdrawn at the break with an injury. Eriksen was also impressive. However, Son was the best of the lot. He marked his performance at Goodison Park with two well-taken goals, but his display was about more than goals. He gave Everton more trouble than any other opposition player, exploiting the space in behind the Toffees’ backline.

KEY MOMENTS

11’ Glorious chance for Kane! Trippier splits the Everton defence with a pass over the top. Kane's first touch sets him up nicely, but he lobs his finish over Pickford and over the bar.
21’ GOAL! Everton 1-0 Spurs: It's a breakthrough for Everton! Sigurdsson threads through Richarlison, who drives to the byline and cuts it back for Walcott, who converts into the gaping net! Lloris got a touch on it, but couldn't keep it out! The Toffees have the lead!
23’ GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... NO! Calvert-Lewin thinks that he has scored, looping a header into the back of the net, but the referee spotted a push on Sanchez.
28’ GOAL! Everton 1-1 Spurs: A defensive mix up allows Spurs to equalise! Pickford crashed into Zouma as the two went for the same ball and that allowed Son to find the back of the empty net with a tremendous finish. There was still plenty for him to do there.
36’ GOAL! Everton 1-2 Spurs: Spurs have turned this game around! Son was played into the channel by Sissoko, he gets the shot away from a tight angle. Pickford makes the save, but Alli is on hand to stick away the rebound, putting his laces through the ball!
42’ GOAL! Everton 1-3 Spurs: It's three for Spurs! Trippier's free-kick from 20 yards out beats Pickford, comes back off the base of the post and Kane was on hand to finish into the empty net! Spurs have taken a commanding grip of the game just before half time! Two-goal cushion.

45’ Alli off! This is a blow for Spurs. Alli has been taken off at the break by Pochettino and he is replaced for the start of the season half by Lamela. Was he injured? Resting him? Surely an injury.
49’ GOAL! Everton 1-4 Spurs: What a goal! Great technique from Eriksen. Coleman headed a cross to the edge of the box, where the Danish playmaker was running on to the ball. He controlled his first time volley and found the back of the Everton net.
51’ GOAL! Everton 2-4 Spurs: Sigurdsson has given Everton a lifeline! It was great play from the Icelandic playmaker who dribbled past a number of Spurs defenders right on the edge of the box and then angled a shot past Lloris, who got a glove to it, but couldn't keep the strike out.
62’ GOAL! Everton 2-5 Spurs: Another wonderful goal from Spurs and that could be them out of sight, finally. Lamela slots through the pass for Son, whose touch sets him up nicely for the shot through the legs of Pickford. Surely there's no way back for Everton now.
74’ GOAL! Everton 2-6 Spurs: It's SIX for Spurs! Another excellent goal from the North London side. Son got down the left wing, crossed for Kane who made no mistake in converting from about eight yards out. Where was the Everton defence? Completely absent!
