FT

Dear me, it is Schmeichel who meets the corner delivery but he heads it wide!

And that is the final action of the game. So Manchester United hold on for a 2-1 victory in an enthralling Premier League opener. Fair play to Leicester who battled to the very end but it's Jose Mourinho's night.

90'+4

DRAMA! Gray's cross is blocked and Leicester have a corner. And here comes Schmeichel to contest the delivery!

Game on? Vardy is off the mark to make things interesting! Ricardo comes in off the left and sends a cross to the back post where Vardy cushions a header past a helpless De Gea.

FOUR minutes of added time to be played.

88'

Wonderful stuff from Sanchez. The Chilean's diagonal pass is inch perfect for Mata, but the Spaniard's cross is slightly behind Lukaku.

85'

An early goal and a fairly late one look set to secure United a victory on the opening night of the Premier League. It hasn't been a vintage performance but Mourinho will be satisfied. The Portuguese will be especially pleased for Pogba who was immense.

GREAT SAVE!

United have a great chance to put the game to bed but Lukaku fluffs his lines! Sanchez rolls the ball across to the Belgian who only needs to beat Schmeichel but the Denmark international makes himself big, blocking the shot and deflecting it over the bar.

75'

CHANCE!

Shaw should clear the ball quicker but he hesitates and allows Vardy to push him off the ball. His driven cross is begging to be finished but Gray fails to make the connection he would have wanted and De Gea gets down low to make a smart save.

73'

In fact, the Foxes haven't registered a shot at goal since the restart.

72'

Leicester are seeing plenty of the ball, working the ball backwards and then to the channel, and repeat. United are keeping them at an arm's length. But can they see it through?

CHANCE!

Pogba's defence-splitting pass picks out Sanchez. With his back to goal the Chilean waits for team mates to arrive and it's Mata who arrives first. The forward wraps his foot around the ball but drags his effort wide. The last touch was off a Leicester player but Andre Marriner didn't spot it and signals for a goal-kick.

63'

GREAT DEFENDING!

Lindelof saved United earlier with a last-gasp challenge and now it's Bailly who saves the day for the hosts. The centre-back races back to shoulder Iheanacho off the ball, just as the Leicester forward was about to pull the trigger.

62'

Lukaku watch

61'

Here we go: Vardy is preparing to come on, and Ghezzal - a double change from the visitors.

60'

Lukaku is back out to warm up and surely it's only a matter of time before we see the Belgian introduced. Jamie Vardy is an option off the bench for Leicester. You can't take your eyes off this one.

58'

I remember covering last season's Premier League opener which was Leicester and Arsenal. It ended 4-3 to the Gunners and what an encounter it was. Could we possibly see more goals in this contest? It just feels like there is at least one more to come.

56'

An ambitious effort from Darmian from the edge of the area but Schmeichel always had it covered.

54'

It's a battle of the debutants! Fred and Maddision clash in midfield. Fred catches the Leicester new boy and receives a booking, though he feels his counter-part should have, in fact, been shown the yellow.

52'

OFFSIDE!

Rashford is released by Sanchez's through-pass! In the perfect position to shoot, he takes one touch too many and narrows the angle for himself. And then the offside flag is raised.

Wow, what pace. Rashford puts on the turbo-charge as he knocks the ball into space and beats Gray for speed down the right, winning a corner as his cross is blocked.

47'

Maguire showing signs of fatigue as he concedes possession in his own half, as United attack from the right through Rashford. His cross is searching for Sanchez but it's easily cut out by Simpson.

46'

The second-half gets underway, with United taking kick-off. There were no changes in personnel at the interval.

HALF-TIME

And what a first-half that was. United made a lightening start, scoring after just three minutes through Pogba's penalty. But Leicester came roaring back and have probably created the better chances. It's set up beautifully for the second-period.

-

United celebrate after scoring their third minute goal. It feels like an awfully long time ago now.

Paul Pogba of Manchester United (hidden) celebrates with team mates after scoring his team's first goal during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Leicester City at Old Trafford
44'

There will be one minute of additional time to be played at the end of the first-half.

42'

Better from United, much, much better. Some lovely inter-link play between Mata and Shaw. The latter shows beautiful control to set himself up for a shot, but it's straight down the throat of Schmeichel.

41'

OFFSIDE!

But it was a close, close call. Fred finds Sanchez with a clever scooped ball over the top, the Chilean tries to catch the Leicester goalkeeper out with a first-time header but doesn't get the direction on the effort. The linesman has his flag raised but he looked level.

40'

For the first time in what feels like an age, United finally register a shot. And it's Pogba, United's most likely creator, who tries his luck from distance. His curler from 25 or 30 yards is straight forward for Schmeichel, though.

38'

Fred catches Gray with an off-the-ball challenge, leaving the Leicester winger in considerable pain. He's fortunate not to even concede a foul.

36'

CHANCE!

Lindelof to the rescue! The Swede reacts quickly to make a vital sliding challenge on Iheanacho who was played through by Gray's clever flick-on.

34'

United are defending so deeply now as they try desperately to weather the storm. There is a chance for the hosts to break but Mata's through-ball to Rashford is overcooked.

32'

Up steps Maddison... but straight into the wall.

31'

Maddison is fouled by Pogba in a dangerous, central position. The young Englishman is over the ball, but so is Chilwell...

29'

SAVE!

And now Maddison almost scores his side's equaliser! He resists the temptation to make a run to the near post to meet Ricardo's cross, instead he remains rooted to the penalty spot and when he receives the pass his first instinct is to shoot. De Gea makes a fine save and United scramble it behind for a corner.

26'

Making his Premier League debut at the Theatre of Dreams, at one of the biggest clubs in the world, but it hasn't fazed Leicester's new boy Maddison. He skips away into space in midfield just now, threading a through ball to Richardo. He finds Chilwell whose cross is blocked for a corner, but it comes to little.

25'

A swing and miss from Ndidi from the edge of the box, much to the relief of the United faithful.

24'

After sustaining some pressure United seem intent on slowing the match down, to take their time and catch their breath.

23'

After a brief warm-up, Lukaku was been told to sit back down by Mourinho as Rashford raced back into the action. He seems fine to continue.

21'

Just had a look at the possession stats and it reads 59% in Leicester's favour.

18'

Leicester are asking questions of the United defence, particularly down the right side where Gray is tormenting Darmian. The hosts need to get their foot on the ball again.

16'

There is a growing concern for Rashford who may have picked up an injury. Romelu Lukaku is warming up.

14'

Darmian looks increasingly worried each and every time Gray has the ball at his feet. This time the Leicester flanker teases a clever pass into the feet of Iheanacho, but the former Man City forward slices his shot just wide. He was offside, anyway.

-

Cool, calm, composed: Pogba gives United the lead.

Manchester United's French midfielder Paul Pogba (R) scores the opening penalty during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Leicester City at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on August 10, 2018
12'

After a nervy start to the game, Leicester are beginning to grow into the contest. The visitors almost string a nice move together, but Maddison's through-pass to Gray has too much zip on it.

11'

Again it's Pogba who rises highest to clear Maddison's devilish free-kick delivery.

10'

If there is a weak-link to this United XI, it is undoubtedly Darmian at right-back. He can't cope with Gray's driving run and resorts to fouling him, conceding a free-kick in a dangerous position in the process.

7'

Chilwell's cross is deep and dangerous but Pogba (who else?) heads clear as United attempt to launch an attack on the break. There may have only been seven minutes played but the Frenchman has been phenomenal thus far.

6'

Maddison, Leicester's new signing from Norwich, draws the foul from Fred on the left flank and the visitors have a chance to test United's rearguard for the first time this evening.

5'

It was a clear handball. Armatey was trying to pull away but it's struck him on the arm and blocked a shot which may have been goal-bound.

4'
3'

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Leicester

And we have lift-off! It's coolness personified as Pogba steps up and lifts the ball into the top right corner. Schmeichel goes the right way but cannot get near it.

2'

PENALTY TO UNITED!

After just 75 seconds, we have our first moment of drama in the Premier League! Amartey is adjudged to have blocked Sanchez's shot with his arm and the referee Andre Marriner points to the spot.

2'

United seem to be operating in a 4-3-3 system, if the early signs are anything to go by.

KICK-OFF!

We are underway at Old Trafford.

19:55

The warm-ups are completed, the team talks are over - it's almost time for kick-off. The Premier League is back and all the action is coming up next, and it's LIVE!

-

Not long until kick-off - excited yet?

19:50

All eyes on Maguire tonight. The centre-back starts for the Foxes having participated in just four training sessions.

19:45

United's starting XI appears to have gone down well on Twitter, with most supporters praising Mourinho for adopting a fresh look to this team. Pogba will, presumably, be operating in a position higher up the pitch while there is genuine excitement about the qualities of Pereira. And of course everyone is keen to see how Fred performs on his debut having shown glimpses of his quality in pre-season.

19:40

Jose Mourinho has also never lost on the opening day of a Premier League campaign, winning eight and drawing one.

19:35

Mourinho simply couldn't hide his frustration that the club couldn't attract a centre-back during the transfer window. Godin and Boateng were heavily linked, while Maguire was the name hot on the lips of most United fans and was the player most likely to join. In the end they couldn't get a deal over the line, so Mourinho has to work with what he's got.

Up step Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof - two defenders Mourinho signed. Can they form the reliable and sturdy centre-back partnership United so crucially need? They have their first opportunity this evening.

19:30

DID YOU KNOW?

Leicester have won only three of their 44 top-flight away matches against Manchester United. Their only Premier League victory at Old Trafford came in February 1998 when Tony Cottee scored the solitary goal.

-
19:25

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has been praising Mourinho for giving Pogba the responsibility of the captain's armband.

"I think it's a good move," said Neville. "What Jose will have seen in the summer was Pogba in the France dressing room, demanding more from the players. He seemed to be a leader."

Interestingly enough, most bookies have Claude Puel as the favourite to be sacked first this campaign, followed by Mourinho.

"We lost Riyad Mahrez, who was a very valuable player for us, so it was important to keep our best players and have good additions to the squad," said Puel.

"We have to prepare for this season with good possibilities."

19:15

Mourinho has lamented the lack of signings this week but now he says it's down to the 'serious stuff''.

"It's not anymore about friendlies, it's not anymore about preparation, it's about points.

"Any point can be crucial - you don't know what is going to happen at the end of the season. You have to try your best to get points and even with the difficulties that we had with our pre-season, now I don't think is the time to be speaking about that.

"It's time just to say 'tomorrow we have a Premier League match' and we have to play to win it."

It is also worth noting that Pogba has been given the captain's armband with Antonio Valencia missing the game through injury.

Paul Pogba starts for Manchester United despite reports linking the Frenchman to a move away from the club. The World Cup winner is in midfield alongside new signing Fred who makes his debut. Marcus Rashford spearheads the attack with Romelu Lukaku only making the bench. Andreas Pereira is handed his first ever league start while Luke Shaw features at full-back.

What's that you say? The Premier League is back? Yes, yes it is and isn't it glorious? And it kicks off with a humdinger as Manchester United host Leicester City.

After a frustrating Transfer Window for Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese turns his focus to on-field action. The club were only able to bring in two outfield players in the summer and his pain is compounded by the large number of players on the injured list.

Having finally lost Riyad Mahrez, Leicester have their own problems. Claude Puel is feeling the pressure after losing five of their last seven Premier League games and desperately needs his side to make a bright start to the campaign.

This tie sounds enthralling, doesn't it? It will be - kick-off is set for 8pm.
