City confirmed that De Bruyne, who injured the knee in training, has damaged the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his right knee and, while he will not require surgery, will miss three months of the season.
“Manchester City can confirm Kevin De Bruyne has suffered a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) lesion in his right knee,” read a statement on the club’s website.
No surgery is required, and the midfielder is expected to be out for around three months.
De Bruyne damaged ligaments in the same knee during a League Cup semi-final victory over Everton in 2016, resulting in him missing 12 games.
He played the final half hour as City began their Premier League title defence with a 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, having only recently returned to training following Belgium’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.
De Bruyne fired eight goals and made 16 assists as City romped to the league title with a record-breaking 100 points last season.
