Manchester City have been dealt a blow after influential playmaker Kevin de Bruyne suffered a knee injury in training, with reports suggesting he could be sidelined for several months.

City announced the 27-year-old is already having tests on his right knee, while respected Belgium journalist Kristof Terreur revealed fears he could be absent for over two months.
"The extent of the problem is not yet known and we will bring you further updates on Kevin's condition in due course," read a brief statement on the club's website.
De Bruyne damaged ligaments in the same knee during a League Cup semi-final victory over Everton in 2016, resulting in him missing 12 games.
He played the final half hour as City began their Premier League title defence with a 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, having only recently returned to training following Belgium’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.
De Bruyne fired eight goals and made 16 assists as City romped to the league title with a record-breaking 100 points last season.

WHAT GAMES COULD DE BRUYNE MISS?

While no timeframe has been announced for De Bruyne’s recovery, thoughts will inevitably turn to the games he could miss. If he was ruled out for two months, he would be absent for six Premier League games plus the opening two games of City’s Champions League campaign.

  • September 29: Brighton (h)
  • October 2/3: Champions League group stage, match two

However, if the prognosis was three months on the sidelines, he would miss an additional six games (excluding League Cup action), including the derby with Manchester United at the Etihad.

  • October 23/24: Champions League group stage, match three
  • October 28: Tottenham (a)
