Matej Vydra's goal on the hour mark gave Burnley a 2-1 victory over Southampton in their Premier League clash at St Mary's Stadium.
In a game that was evenly poised before kick off it was a bizarre goal after less than two minutes that got the game started. Westwood's in swinging corner went straight into the back of the net as Danny Ings jumped out of the way of the ball.
But it was Ings that redeemed himself on 17 minutes with his 18th goal in all competitions. The former Burnley front man was alive on the edge of the box as he reacted quickly to deliver a low, hard drive that curled away from Nick Pope who could do little to stop the strike.
There were early decisions to be made by both managers as key players went out injured. Burnley's Chris Wood was replaced by Vydra on 22 minutes and Southampton's dynamic Sofiane Boufal, who had been causing Phil Bardsley all sorts of problems down the left flank, also went out and was replaced by Moussa Djenepo.
The home side had plenty of possession and always looked dangerous when they got Ings on the ball, but their attacks continued to fizzle out in the final third as the game wore on. This played perfectly into Burnley's game plan, as they soaked up the pressure and forged chances when they found themselves in the Southampton half.
Substitute Vydra, who has had limited game time for Burnley this season showed what he's capable of with a beautifully-taken goal. He caressed a long ball down off his chest, shifted it into space and lashed a fierce shot past McCarthy from just inside the box.
There were calls for handball with less than 10 minutes to go as Jack Stephen produced another surging run into the Burnley box. His cross hit the arm of captain Ben Mee, but after a check from VAR the penalty wasn't given much to the dismay of Hasenhüttl on the sideline.
It was the type of playing conditions that Sean Dyche's side thrive in as they looked confident in possession and were defensively solid. The Clarets snuffed out Southampton's efforts and frustrated the home fans who braved Storm Dennis as the saw out a 2-1 victory to climb up to 10th.
