It is Targett who swung the ball over and Pickford punched away from danger.
Davis is foulded by Allan on the right hand side of the Everton box, near the corner flag. One last chance for Grealish to put a ball into the box.
With Mings back on his feet, if gingerly, a throw is put into the box and cleared to Allan who shoots high over the bar
A dangerous ball across the box from Richarlison that Mings clears and then hurts him and his keeper as they collide.
McGinn is booked for a foul stopping Gomez on the counter-attack.
A nasty foul on Calvert-Lewin from Mings. A lunging studs-up foul under the striker's kneeThe VAR are looking at it......No red card given. Not even a yellow. If they weren't international team-mates and it happened in the summer tournament for example, you can bet it would have been a red.
Double let-off for Villa. A fine cross from Digne finds Calvert-Lewin rising majestically at the far post but Martinez parried and the rebound was turned back towards goal by Doucoure too high for Richarlison to get a good connection at his attempted close-rage header.
That's the side of Grealish we havent missed...He runs to the edge of the box then falls over clutching his face. The referee waves play on.
Richarlison got down the right flank and pulled a ball back for Gomez whose low effort was blocked by El Mohamady's outstretched leg. That might have had Martinez beaten.
Coleman is replaced by Iwobi, a more attacking presence on the right flank.
Targett drives a low all across the penalty area but El Mohamady's weak effort is deflected wide.
Grealish is on! He replaces Traore. A great sight for Villa fans.
Gomes is immediately found on the edge of the box by Richarlison but after turning past Mings blazes miles over the bar with his left foot.
Gomes comes on for Sigurdsson for the visitors.
Ramsey comes on for Barkley who has been disappointing against his former side.
Holgate heads Digne's free kick on target but it is easy for Martinez to save.
El Ghazi curls a free kick on target and Pickford makes one of the great cameras saves to punch away from danger.
El Ghazi takes on Holgate and Godfrey on the left flank and it deflects off the latter for a corner.
Sigurdsson clips a ball over the defence and Godfrey at the far post diverts a volley on the stretch that Martinez had to push away just inside the post.
Coleman is brought down by McGinn 35 yards from goal.
This time a short ball from Doucoure feeds Calvert-Lewin in the box but in getting past Konsa he pushes the ball too far and Martinez can collect.
Calvert-Lewin is through on goal but Martinez does well spreading himself to block the shot. The linesman's flag goes up afterwards. He was just off latching onto a gorgeous ball from Doucoure.
No Jack Grealish yet as Villa get us underway for the second half.
A very dull half of football that deserves to go in goalless.
Elmohamady comes on for Cash who has injured his hamstring.
Richarlison runs to the edge of the box but the Villa defenders crowd him out and it goes through to Martinez.
Traore gets booked for going down in the box under the close attention of Godfrey.
Targett finds El Ghazi in the box and he gets to the by-line before Holgate deflects his cross behind.
Dangerous cross from Digne has Martinez scrambling towards his back post but it evades him and the sliding Calvert-Lewin.
Barkley gets a ball played from McGinn into his feet on the edge of the box but can't bring it under control.
Richarlison has his first sighter of goal from the edge of the box but it is a tame effort drifting wide of the target.
Siggurdsson curls a free kick over the wall but Martinez easily moves to his right and catches it on his chest.
Davis latches onto a ball over top in the inside left channel and then hits a nice looking square ball behind the Everton defence but Barkley was a long way from the penalty area.
Bit of comedy there as Traore played a ball which Davis and Cash raced towards with the latter swinging his leg at the ball and only succeeding in kicking the former.
The best chances falling to Villa. El Ghazi turns 180 degrees and has time to line his shot at goal from 20 yards but fires well over the bar.
Close from Mings! A corner came to Luiz at the back edge of the box and he gets to the by-line before clipping back to the six-yard box where Mings, all alone, met the ball with a diving header which flew a yard wide.
Targett puts in a very dangerous cross behind the Everton defence but Digne comes across and heads clear in front of El Ghazi.
Coleman with a better ball into Calvert-Lewin but the England striker opts to head towards goal from an awkward angle when he'd have been better looking for one of his team-mates.
Traore hits the ball first time after El Ghazi's low square ball but it is easy for Pickford to gather.
Coleman has time to put in a dangerous cross but hangs it in the air and Martinez grabs just in front of his goal-line.
Targett gleefully wins a free kick against Coleman when the Villa full back was just hoping not to give away a corner.
Two very organised and well-matched sides judging by the first eight minutes. Everton have gone with a back three, with Coleman and Digne as wingbacks.
Bertrand Traore has the first shot of the game - it is blocked.
Everton get the game underway...
It is a bit strange Everton being so favoured tonight when they lost at home to Villa just 12 days ago.
Jack Grealish on the bench a big fillip for Villa tonight - and for his chances of making the England Euros squad.
Everton are being backed to win this evening, with 6/4 only now available at a few bookies while the hosts are better than a 2/1 shot at Villa Park.
Nailed on Everton win it seems then...
Everton have two change from their victory at West Ham with Mason Holgate and Abdoulaye Doucoure coming in for the injured Yerry Mina and Tom Davies, who drops to the bench.
Keinan Davis for the suspended Ollie Watkins is Villa's only change.
And these are the Toffees who will take the field in just over 45 minutes' time...
This is how the Villans are lining up...
