Highlights

FT

That's full-time, and it's a big victory for Manchester United.

90+6'

Matic is struggling now, with what looks like a groin injury.

90+5'

It looks like Martial's hamstring has tweaked during that move, he's replaced by Axel Tuanzebe.

90+4'

WHAT A MISS! Lovely play from Martial and Cavani releases the former clean through on goal. He could smash the half-volley but he tamely prods it at Pope, who saves with his legs.

90+1'

Heroic stuff from Shaw here as he throws himself at a loose ball that was bouncing dangerously around in United's six-yard box. He's banged heads with Mee, let's hope both are ok. There will be four additional minutes.

89'

Scott McTominay replaces Fernandes.

87'

Jay Rodriguez is on for Burnley, though I didn't see who for.

87'

CHANCE! A low cross from the right squirts through the United area and falls to Vydra, whose flash shot is blocked by Bailly and crashes into the side-netting.

85'

A long ball to the back post is headed to the edge of the area by Wan-Bissaka, and Brownhill slashes his shot a couple of yards wide.

82'

CLOSE! That could have been the game. Pogba picks out a lovely short pass to release Martial into the area, but just as he shoots from ten yards out Tarkowski slides in with a superb challenge to block the shot. He's kept his team in it there.

80'

That's the last action for Rashford as he's replaced by Mason Greenwood. Matej Vydra replaces Wood for Burnley.

79'

Cavani has got through some work tonight. He wins the ball for United in Burnley's half and slides a pass through to Rashford on the left side of the Burnley area, but he can't work an angle for a shot.

77'

Can Burnley get back into this? Lowton tries a cross from the right, but it's straight into the hands of De Gea.

73'

That's been in the post since half-time, with Pogba increasingly influential in this match.

  • Paul Pogba
GoalPaul PogbaManchester UnitedGOAL! Burnley 0 Manchester United (Pogba 71) It's been coming! Rashford gets in space on the right, and chips it to the edge of the area. Pogba is waiting there to volley it, and it catches a slight deflection off Lowton that wrongfoots Pope and sends the ball through him and into the net.

GOAL! Burnley 0 Manchester United (Pogba 71)

It's been coming! Rashford gets in space on the right, and chips it to the edge of the area. Pogba is waiting there to volley it, and it catches a slight deflection off Lowton that wrongfoots Pope and sends the ball through him and into the net.

70'

United have got all the ball here, with Shaw and Wan-Bissaka advanced, but can't find a way through yet.

67'

United win a corner. Burnley don't clear it effectively and it falls to Cavani, but he digs beneath the shot with his left foot and curls it well wide of the far post.

65'

It's a change for Burnley, as Dwight McNeil replaces Brady.

  • Ashley Westwood

62'

Westwood is booked for clipping Rashford's heels as he broke through the Burnley midfield.

60'

Fernandes has another yahoo from distance, but again it's straight at Pope who gathers at the second attempt.

59'

Rashford clips in a cross to the back post, which is awkwardly cleared by Pieters. United are really knocking here, with Pogba at the heart of everything.

56'

Wan-Bissaka finds Fernandes on the edge of the area with a nice pass infield. Fernandes opens up and shoots with his left, but it's straight at Pope again.

52'

CHANCE! United should be in front. Pogba breaks imperiously through the middle and finds Fernandes. He in turn finds Martial, who crosses to Cavani. He's six yards out, but Cavani miscues his volley completely and it trickles through into the hands of Pope.

51'

Gudmundsson, Barnes and Wood work a nice passing movement on the edge of the United area, but Wood completely miskicks his shot and it goes well wide.

49'

United are full of intent here, and swarming around the Burnley area. Fernandes tries a shot from 25 yards out, which Mee throws his head at to clear.

2ND HALF

We're off again, no changes.

HT

That's half time; plenty of talking points, and none of them around actual goals.

45+3'

Fernandes goes in the book, I think for backchat.

45+2'

We've got four added minutes. Shaw makes an adventurous run infield, and finds Rashford on the right of the area, but he can't get the ball under control.

45'

GOOD SAVE! It's all United at the end of regulation. Martial opens up on his right foot and bends one for the top corner, which Pope does well to tip over the bar.

42'

Fernandes gets in space on the left edge of the Burnley area, and tries an inswinging cross that's just over the head of Cavani.

38'

Pogba wins a header in the penalty area, and Cavani tries a volley which Mee bravely blocks with his face.

36'

DISALLOWED GOAL! Shaw whips a ball into the back post, where Maguire gets up to plant a header back across goal and into the top corner. That's a great header, but it's been chalked for a foul on Pieters as Maguire jumped over him. It looked harsh to say the least, as Maguire had the run on Pieters, who never got off the ground.

35'

The free kick eventually came to nothing for Burnley. That's been a huge disruption to the game, and both teams need to settle back down now.

  • Luke Shaw
Yellow cardLuke ShawManchester UnitedThis could be massive decision either way. Eventually, after five minutes, it's all pulled back for a free kick on the edge of the United area and a yellow for Shaw. That seems harsh, as on the replay Shaw clearly played the ball first and Gudmundsson ran into his follow through.

27'

Shaw flattens Gudmundsson in a 50:50. Burnley want a foul but nothing doing, and United break. Fernandes fires a long ball that squirts through to Cavani, who is through but is flattened by Brady is he bears down on goal. Mee is nearby, but the United players are screaming for a red card. Both parts of the move are being reviewed by VAR...

25'

CHANCE! United win the ball in the Burnley half from a throw, and Matic fires a lovely pass through to Martial. He's one on one with Lowton, and jinks to the side of him before curling his left-footed shot a yard over the bar from the edge of the area.

22'

CHANCE! Fernandes gives the ball away in midfield. It's chipped forwards to Barnes, who nudges it into the path of Wood, who sees his shot from 15 yards out deflected over the bar.

20'

United work a nice move between Rashford, Cavani and Fernandes on the right of the Burnley area. Fernandes stands it up to the penalty spot, where Martial throws himself into an overhead kick but it's blocked.

17'

CHANCE! Shaw crosses low to the book of the penalty area. Fernandes arrives and hits it first time, but it's straight down the gullet of Pope.

16'

United win a free kick after Cavani is dumped over on the touchline. Fernandes swings it in to the penalty spot, but Tarkowski is up highest to clear.

13'

Another long ball forward is cleared by Maguire to Mee, who slashes a shot hopelessly wide from 25 yards out.

10'

Early signs that this will be a physical battle early on, as Burnley pump a few more long balls forward and try to click them on.

7'

Gundmundsson whips a dangerous ball in to the back post, which Wan-Bissaka and Maguire just about manage to tidy up to win a free kick for United. Burnley are lumping it with intent to that left side of United's defence.

5'

It's all United so far, but it's involved a lot of sideways-forwards-back passing.

  • 1st Half
1'

We're underway at Turf Moor. There's an early sighter for Robbie Brady, as a long, diagonal ball finds him on the left corner of the area., but he booms a shot very high and wide.

20:14

There is a moment of silence before kick-off to acknowledge the Burnley fans that lost their lives in 2020. The players then take the knee before kick-off; there is no room for racism.

20:10

We're almost ready to go here as the players prepare to take the field. Your referee for tonight's chuckles is Kevin Friend.

20:06
20:00

A quick reminder of the last two occasions that these teams met - just ten days shy of a year ago, Burnley stunned Old Trafford with a 2-0 victory.

19:55

At times, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign at Manchester United has been a curious, reverse curate’s egg; good overall, but some bits have been very bad indeed. Although there have been spells where United looked to have tanked, they have been surrounded by longer periods where there has been undeniable upward progress. United were sixth in 2018-19, third in 2019-20 and will go top of the league tonight if they avoid defeat here.

19:50

It was a miserable start to the season for Burnley, losing five of their first six league games, but Sean Dyche has steadied the ship impressively thereafter. Burnley’s record reads won four, drawn three and lost two since then, and they’re out of the relegation zone and up to 16th in the table. The chief concern for them is goals; just nine so far in this campaign, the joint worst total as I type as Sheffield United are one up against Newcastle.

19:45

Harry Maguire starts tonight despite being one yellow card away from a suspension ahead of United's trip to Anfield. Edison Cavani returns up front after completing his three-match ban for using an offensive term in a social media post. There’s also an opportunity in midfield for Nemanja Matic alongside Paul Pogba.

19:40

As Burnley’s previous Premier League fixture against Fulham was postponed due to the coronavirus, this is their first league outing in 2021. Charlie Taylor comes in at left-back with Erik Pieters advanced further up the wing, while Gudmundsson slots in at right midfield for the Clarets.

19:35

Your genial hosts tonight, Burnley:

19:25

Good evening and welcome to live coverage of Manchester United versus Burnley in the Premier League. Teams from Turf Moor to your door shortly.

A Burnley win tonight will push them eight points away from the relegation zone that was haunting them earlier in the season. And if United win, they’ll move three clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, ahead of their visit to Anfield on Sunday.

Plenty to play for then; the teams will start working things out from 8.15pm.
