FULL-TIME: Leeds United 0-1 Aston Villa
The away side hold on despite the bouts of pressure from Leeds throughout. Leeds may have dominated possession and created a lot of chances themselves, but barring Raphinha's late header the quality of their chances was lacking. They'd probably also feel aggrieved by the fact that Targett wasn't sent off for any of his rash challenges that came after his initial yellow.
Leeds have a corner and Meslier's come running into the opposition box! You love to see it!
5 minutes of added time. Is that enough time for Leeds to score?
Villa are just trying to see this one out rather than chase a second themselves.
CLOSE!!! That's the best chance Leeds have had all game! Harrison floats in a cross to the far post and Raphinha's header is somehow kept out. Bielsa has his head in his hands.
- OffAnwar El GhaziAston Villa
- OnTrezeguetAston Villa
The goalscorer El Ghazi is substituted off for Trezeguet, who's making his 50th Premier League appearance.
Bamford's diving header is deflected out for a corner by Konsa. This match has really petered out over the past 10-20 minutes in all honesty.
- Yellow cardPablo HernándezLeeds United
Targett has really had nine lives tonight. He clatters Hernandez from behind and instead of getting a second yellow himself, Hernandez gets booked for dissent.
- Yellow cardAhmed Al-MuhamadiAston Villa
Elmohamady's turn to enter the referee's book now. He gets his for timewasting over a free-kick in his own half?
- OffJacob RamseyAston Villa
- OnMorgan SansonAston Villa
Morgan Sanson - Aston Villa's £15 million January signing from Marseille - is substituted on for Ramsey, who has really impressed me this evening.
Targett almost picks up a second yellow for an overzealous challenge on Raphinha, but it ends up just being a free-kick. The Leeds winger sends in a free-kick but Martinez negotiates it comfortably.
Roberts' search for a first Premier League goal continues. Leeds make their third and final change to bring on for Pablo Hernandez for him.
- OffHélder CostaLeeds United
- OnJack HarrisonLeeds United
Jack Harrison, who was dropped for Costa tonight, comes on for him as Bielsa tries to find a way to get an equaliser.
- Yellow cardMateusz KlichLeeds United
Cards starting to flow now. One for Klich.
- Yellow cardMatt TargettAston Villa
- Yellow cardTyler RobertsLeeds United
More drama as there's an altercation between Roberts and Targett! The Villa full-back makes the initial foul, but then cynically tries to stop Roberts from grabbing the ball while getting up. Roberts lets out his frustration and Targett falls to the floor pretending to be hit. Both players receive a yellow card for their troubles.
Leeds have the ball in a dangerous area just outside the box but Villa's midfield shape and pressing make it near impossible for them to find a breakthrough. They then try to play the ball out wide but Elmohamady shows great positional awareness to assess the danger and shepherd the ball out of play.
- OffPascal StruijkLeeds United
- OnEzgjan AlioskiLeeds United
First sub of the game is a Leeds one. Alioski replaces Struijk, which will cause a shuffle of personnel in some way but not sure exactly how. Alioski will slot in at left-back and Dallas could then perhaps move into central midfield?
Leeds have a free-kick of their own now, but the delivery is uncharacteristically bad from Raphinha.
Traore has a free-kick on the left flank near the touchline, but it's dealt with comfortably the Leeds defence.
- 2nd Half
Back for the second half now! Can Leeds pull a goal back? Or will Villa extend their lead?
Noticed this before the game! Inspired fashion decision
The quality of the pitch at Elland Road has come under a lot of criticism recently. Would definitely help explain to some extent why players have been slipping over a lot and why some of the passing has been disjointed.
Aston Villa celebrate their opening goal against Leeds
- End of 1st Half
HALF-TIME: Leeds United 0-1 Aston Villa
An enjoyable first half that was quite evenly matched. The home side may have had the lions share of possession and a good few shots on goal, but Villa definitely had the better quality of chances with El Ghazi's goal gifting them the lead.
Watkins mistimes a challenge on Llorente and the Spaniard goes down in a heap. Watkins tries to help him up in rather forceful fashion and Llorente shows he was massively exaggerating by squaring up to him! No cards shown by the ref though, bizarrely.
Raphinha curls in a free-kick from the right and Ayling manages to loop a header from it towards goal that Martinez claims easily.
Watkins wins the ball off Roberts and goes charging up the field on a lone mission! He does the hard work but his deflected shot bobbles into Meslier's hands.
Clever corner is pulled back to Costa, who's got tonnes of space to size up a shot that eventually can't find its way through a wall of defenders.
Klich finds Raphinha on the left. He sends in an early cross through a few defenders, which Martinez leaves his line early to claim. If Bamford started his run earlier he might have been able to get on the end of that.
Unsurprisingly, this has been an entertaining watch so far with both teams showing lots of attacking intent and having shots on goal. The only surprise is that only one of them has found the back of the net.
Raphinha is a brilliant footballer to watch. Again weaves his way between a few defenders in the Villa box until a misunderstanding with a teammate puts a stop to their attack. Could see him doing damage at some point in this game.
Great ball from Llorente but Roberts blasts it over the crossbar. Probably should've done better with that.
Leeds lose the ball through a throw-in near the halfway line and a lovely sequence of one or two touch passing from Villa ensues before yep, you guessed it...El Ghazi shoots. Made a lovely connection with the ball but it's just wide.
Mesmerising skill from Raphinha to trickle his way through the Villa defence and into the box! His pass is cut out though and the resulting corner is headed straight at Martinez.
SAVED!! If this was Football Manager Dean Smith would have clearly ticked 'shoot on sight' for El Ghazi because he's had yet another shot from range! Well saved by Meslier again, but Villa definitely looking the more likely side to score and add to their first goal.
SAVED!! El Ghazi, clearly buoyed by his goal, takes an audacious shot from range and Meslier tips it over!
He definitely thought it was offside! Last time he played at Elland Road he was sent off...
SAVED!! Raphinha cuts in from the left and has his shot stopped. The rebound falls to Roberts whose shot is also kept out by Martinez.
- GoalAnwar El GhaziAston Villa
GOAL!!! Villa's corner evades everyone before the ball ends up with Watkins, who much like Bamford a few minutes before, slips mid-shot. Luckily for him, El Ghazi latches onto it and finishes past Meslier! 1-0 Villa.
Bamford has the ball on the edge of the area and controls the ball brilliantly but he slips over midway through his trickery. His attempted shot almost ends up being a great cross for Raphinha though, who can't quite reach it.
- 1st Half
And we're live!
Definitely a good time to make an impression then!
Wonder if players know Gareth Southgate will be at their game beforehand...if so, it surely has an impact on how they play.
BAMFORD FOR ENGLAND?
Pat Bamford continues to strengthen his case for an England call-up each week. Even though he's on 13 Premier League goals this season, it's a position England are stacked with talent in. Would he make your final squad for the Euros this summer?
He initially played for Republic of Ireland - qualifying through his grandparents - at Under-18 level, before going on to represent England at youth level too.
Will it be another tense encounter at Elland Road between these two sides?
Baby-faced French youth international Illan Meslier continues to impress in goal despite his age. In Leeds' last match - a 3-0 win over Southampton - he became the first ever Premier League goalkeeper to have 8 clean sheets before their 21st birthday.
In a position typically dominated by experienced players, which other goalkeepers have made waves early on in their career?
Glowing praise for Jacob Ramsey from Villa manager Dean Smith! His only previous Premier League start was their 1-0 win against Wolves in December.
ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
A second ever Premier League start for Jacob Ramsey and a rare start for Marvelous Nakamba are the two changes made by Villa in light of their 2-1 loss to Leicester City last Sunday.
Although they are hindered by recent injuries to Jack Grealish and Matty Cash, the fact that experienced players such as Ross Barkley and Douglas Luiz are on the bench showcases their depth.
18 year-old Kaine Kesler is on the bench too and would make his Premier League debut if brought on.
LEEDS TEAM NEWS
Marcelo Bielsa only makes one change to the starting XI from the 3-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday, as Helder Costa replaces Jack Harrison on the wing.
Key players such as Kalvin Phillips, Robin Koch and Rodrigo being out injured means a youthful bench from which three players could make their Premier League debuts.
