FT: Southampton 1-0 Liverpool. Well that is a turn up for the books! This cannot be blamed on defensive injuries, as the champions' strikeforce fell flat at St Mary's. Game on in the title race! Thanks for joining us. Goodnight.
OVER! Mane was the one to meet the corner, but heads over. That surely is that.
Corner to Liverpool. Alisson is up....
Three added minutes here.
Liverpool go from side to side, but cannot find a way through.
Still, Saints looks pretty comfortable here. Liverpool pressing but creating nothing.
OFF THE LINE! What an impact that would have been by Valery, as he beats Alisson to the ball, with the Brazilian coming a long way out of his box but fails to win the race, Valery steers the ball towards the empty goal, but without enough pace, and Henderson gets back to clear off the line.
Yan Valery replaces Walcott for Saints.
- Yellow cardXherdan ShaqiriLiverpool
Yellow card for Shaqiri as Liverpool frustrations start to get the better of them.
- OffTrent Alexander-ArnoldLiverpool
- OnJames MilnerLiverpool
Change for each side. James Milner is on for Alexander-Arnold, while Daniel N'Lundulu is on for ings for Saints.
Alexander-Arnold drills one for goal, but that is always heading wide.
CHANCE! Finally - a Liverpool shot on target! But it is a tame effort from Mane, who scuffs the ground and Forster makes an easy save.
Robertson with a woeful ball down the line, to nobody.
He has read the game brilliantly.
Still Liverpool toil. Next goals wins here, it feels very much like.
Lovely turn from Firmino, he drills a low cross into the middle, but again it is cleared.
The game is a little scrappy now. Just needs one moment of pure quality to ignite things.
Perhaps not. For all their dominance, Liverpool still have not had a shot on target.
Mane with abnother cross which is just cleared. A goal is coming...
NO PENALTY! That was a close call. Mane goes down under challenge from Walker-Peters, but nothing is given. No overrule from VAR either.
Those calves are quite something...
BLOCK! Stephens to the rescue for Saints. Mane is in, stabs for goal from close range, but Stephens slides in to block.
- OffAlex Oxlade-ChamberlainLiverpool
- OnXherdan ShaqiriLiverpool
Well that was a bit of nightmare for Oxlade-Chamberlain, as he is replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri.
Finally, Saints enjoy some possession, and respite.
One-way traffic here. Liverpool come again...
NO PENALTY! Loud appeals for handball against Jack Stephens, but nothing is given. VAR concurs.
Thiago with a drilled effort from the edge of the box, but it is blocked. Better from the champions.
Low cross from Robertson looks for Salah, but Ryan Bertrand does well to get back.
- 2nd Half
KICK OFF! We are back under way here. No further changes for either side.
We wouldn't be in this mess, for sure.
So far so good.
- End of 1st Half
HT: Southampton 1-0 Liverpool. The hosts, through former Liverpool hitman Ings, are good value for their lead here. The champions have not got going here.
Salah gets up highest to meet a corner, but cannot keep the header down.
Four added minutes here.
Another fine more from Saints. Ward Prowse's pass into Ings is superb, Ings tries to lay it across for Theo Walcott, but Fabinho just gets there.
Still all Saints. Liverpool's front three look well off the pace.
WIDE! What a story that would have been! Ings flicks the ball on, Tella works space for the shot, thinks he has scored his first Premier League goal, but sees his strike flash agonisingly wide.
Salah takes a tumble in the box, but he is never getting a penalty for that.
Liverpool are beginning to look a little more settled on the ball.
A big blow for Saints.
OVER! Mane works space for the shot well, has plenty to aim at, but curls well over the top.
For those who have not seen.
- OffMoussa DjenepoSouthampton
- OnNathan TellaSouthampton
Looks like a hamstring injury for Djenepo, as he limps off. Young Nathan Tella is on in his place.
Worry here for Saints, with Djenepo staying down and needing treatment.
Saints on the attack again, free-kick in a dangerous position...
OVER! Ings in the thick of it again with a lovely lay off into Moussa Djenepo, who curls just over the top.
Robertson aims a cross towards Mane which is cleared away by Bednarek. Liverpool are having most of the pressure, but Forster is yet to make a save.
Liverpool have not settled, at all here. Even their front three is clicking is not clicking into gear.
Raises his bat to salute the crowd.
Liverpool taking a few risks at the back, and just about getting away with it.
Saints looking comfortable in their lead here.
- Yellow cardAndrew RobertsonLiverpool
Another yellow card for a Liverpool player, this time for Andy Robertson for a tackle on fellow Scot Stuart Armstorng.
Look at that technique.
Lovely cross into the middle from Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Kyle Walker-Peters does just enough to beat Sadio Mane to the ball and clears.
Liverpool press, but cannot create an opening of note as yet.
What can Liverpool do here? With this defence, they may well have to score three or four to sneak a win here!
- Yellow cardThiagoLiverpool
Thiago's second tackle earns him a yellow card. Not a great start for the Spain international.
It really was.
That free-kick was straight off the training ground. Super goal.
Thiago concedes a free-kick. James Ward-Prowse clips in a clever pass into Ings, but the finish is sublime, hooked over a stranded Alisson. His second for Saints against his former club.
- GoalDanny IngsSouthampton
GGGGGGOOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Southampton 1-0 Liverpool. What a start! Danny Ings! Against his former club!
- 1st Half
KICK OFF! We are under way here at St Mary's.
So here we go. Liverpool are looking less than invincible at the moment, but Saints, for all their fine form this season, are without a win in their last four. Something, however, has got to give!
Ahead of kick off catch up with all the latest transfer talk from across Europe as Sergio Ramos is linked with a move to the Premier League.
Mohamed Salah has scored seven goals in his six Premier League games against Southampton, only scoring more against Bournemouth (8) and Watford (8) in the competition. They may need him to fire tonight, with that makeshift defence...
An explanation for Saints' change of goalkeeper this evening.
A defender, surely?
Can he pull the strings tonight and get Liverpool back to winning ways?
HEAD TO HEAD: Southampton have lost each of their last six Premier League meetings with Liverpool, scoring just twice and conceding 17 goals in these games. Also, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League meetings with Southampton (W6 D2), keeping a clean sheet in six of those matches.
THIAGO STARTS, NO LIVERPOOL CB: Some real surprises in both line-ups this evening. With Joel Matip the latest defender to pick up an injury, Liverpool start the game at St Mary's without a recognised central defender. It appears Jordan Henderson will fill in alongside Fabinho. Thiago Alcanatara is fit to start just his second league match. With Alex McCarthy having contracted Covid-19, Fraser Forster is back in for his first Southampton appearance since May 2019 in goal.
TEAM NEWS - SOUTHAMPTON: Forster, Walker-Peters, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Diallo, Armstrong, Djenepo, Ings, Walcott... Subs: Lewis, Long, Valery, Smallbone, Tella, Vokins, Ramsay, N’Lundulu, Chauke. /// LIVERPOOL: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Henderson, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Firmino, Mane. Subs: Kelleher, Milner, Jones, Minamino, Shaqiri, Origi, Rhys Williams, Phillips, Neco Williams.
The teams are in...
Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Liverpool's trip to Southampton in the Premier League. It looks like we do have a title race on our hands after all! Liverpool have looked a little more human of late, drawing their last two against Newcastle and West Brom, and Saints will be no pushover this evening, having come on leaps and bounds this season under Ralph Hassenhuttl.
