FT

Full-time: First-half goals from Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva prove the hosts' undoing as Pep Guardiola's side inflict a first defeat on Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa. It's now six straight victories for the Citizens.

90'+2

City are comfortably winding down the clock.

90'

FOUR minutes will be added on! Every Grealish touch has been greeted with jeers.

There are a lot of boos as Grealish is introduced for the last few minutes. He replaces Jesus.

83'

Chukwuemeka delivers a cross but Ake reacts quickest to clear. Jack Grealish is preparing to come on for City.

82'

City have 10 minutes to hold on for all three points. It'd be a blow to their title chances if they concede and somehow don't win the game now.

79'

By the way, Liverpool are now leading 4-1 at Goodison Park.

Morgan Sanson comes on for Nakamba.

74'

Big save! Buendia threads it through to Chukwuemeka... is this the moment for the teenager? He has just the goalkeeper to beat! Ederson makes himself big though and makes the save! Villa so close to an equaliser!

72'

City chance! Silva is played in behind Villa's defence and pulls it back for Jesus, but he rushes his finish and fails to find the target.

71'

Chelsea are now leading 2-1 at Watford which means, as it stands, City will remain second.

69'

City have had the lion's share of possession in the second half but have lacked a cutting edge.

67'

An exciting switch for Villa as Carney Chukwuemeka is Targett's replacement.

65'

Targett is down receiving treatment. Having lost Bailey to injury in the first half, Gerrard does not need to lose another player.

62'

With 20 minutes remaining at Vicarage Road, Watford are still holding Chelsea 1-1 which means City remain top of the 'live' Premier League table. But only just, Villa are playing really since at the moment.

60'

Villa appeal for a penalty! Watkins is at the far post to head the ball across the face of goal. Konsa looks poised to tap in but Ake makes a vital interception, but did he impede his counterpart? VAR has a look... no penalty!

58'

Shot! Jesus connects with another shot and although this time it's on target it's never troubling Martinez.

57'

Deflection! Mahrez's corner delivery picks out Jesus in space on the edge of the area. His shot is deflected behind for yet another City corner.

55'

Silva leaves his marker on the floor as he twists and turns at the by-line before delivering a cross into the middle. Konsa is there to make the interception.

-
53'

In response, Zinchenko blazes over from distance. City have lost their way a little.

51'

That goal from Villa has lifted the home fans' spirits, as you can imagine. Can the hosts go on to find an equaliser now?

-

Here it is...

48'

That has changed the complexion of this match! The third goal was always going to be important and Gerrard will be delighted his side have got it.

Half-time: Manchester City are in total control at Villa Park thanks to a collector's item from Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva's memorable first-time volley. As it stands - because Watford and Chelsea are currently drawing 1-1 - Pep Guardiola's side are going top of the league.

City have looked entirely comfortable since breaking the deadlock. Their goal came just at a time when Villa were looking their most confident in the game. It seems to have knocked the hosts for six. Gerrard will be looking forward to getting his players in for a chat half-time which is now just five minutes away.

38'

Demarai Gray has pulled a goal back for Everton against Liverpool - it's now 2-1 to Jurgen Klopp's side.

36'

Villa fail to clear the corner delivery, it falls to Jesus whose shot from the edge of the penalty area is blocked.

35'

Martinez feels under pressure as City press high and passes the ball straight out for a Man City corner.

33'

Mahrez swivels and unloads with a shot but Mings is there to make the block.

Bailey appears to have hurt his thigh muscle and requires treatment.

29'

Block! A positive response from Villa as Douglas Luiz fires it into the feet of Buendia whose shot is deflected behind for a corner. And although nothing comes of the set-piece there have been signs of encouragement for the hosts recently despite the scoreline.

  • Rúben Dias
GoalRúben DiasManchester CityGOAL! Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City (Ruben Dias): Sterling drops to the shoulder to get past McGinn and race to the by-line. He pulls it back for Dias who doesn't catch it cleanly but his left-footed shot flies into the bottom corner leaving Martinez helpless.

25'

Villa have now had 40% of possession as the game becomes more stretched. Just as I write that, Buendia drives them forward but then lets himself down with a sloppy pass.

24'

Villa continue to play on the counter-attack as Bailey runs centrally but tries to go it alone instead of playing through Buendia and loses possession.

23'

Save! Ederson's amazing kick finds Sterling on the left flank and he finds Zinchenko in space. He tries his luck and although the shot has plenty of power in it Martinez hardly has to move to make the stop.

22'

Mo Salah makes it 2-0 at Goodison Park. Liverpool are strolling to victory.

21'

Ake has to be alert to beat Watkins to Douglas Luiz's low and hard cross.

-

He's already tested Martinez tonight.

18'

Mason Mount has just given Chelsea the lead at Watford while Liverpool are 1-0 up in the Merseyside Derby. City are currently the only team in the top three who aren't winning.

15'

No penalty! Jesus takes a tumble inside the Villa penalty area. Did Cash get a toe to the ball? Mike Dean believes so as City's appeals for a spot-kick go ignored!

14'

A good old fashioned drop-ball is awarded by Mike Dean following a coming together! Villa win as the hosts clear their lines.

12'

Block! Villa come alive! Watkins carries the ball forward, feeds it to Buendia who switches it to Bailey. His first time shot is blocked by Zinchenko.

10'

Watkins wins a free-kick to finally relieve the pressure on Villa, who have had to weather a storm for 10 minutes!

9'

Possession - Aston Villa 15 % - Man City 85%.

7'

Wave after wave of City attack as the visitors now force a corner. Relentless pressure!

5'

Save! Villa goalkeeper Martinez is called into action once more, this time to deny Rodri's powerful effort.

4'

Block! Twice Jesus could go down inside the penalty area but to his credit the Manchester City forward stays on his feet, twisting and turning, finding the space for a shot which is eventually charged down by Mings.

3'

From the resulting corner, Jesus curls a shot well wide. Villa can't get out of their own half at the moment!

2'

Save! An early City chance! Sterling cuts in off the left flank, switches the ball to Mahrez on the right and he finds Cancelo on the overlap. He tries to blast it across the face but Martinez is there to block it.

Kick-off! The players take the knee before City get us underway!

20:13

The players have emerged, the managers have made their way to their seats and we're almost ready for action!

20:10

Five minutes until kick-off at Villa Park! Don't you just love football under the lights?

20:00

Opta stat: Aston Villa have lost 12 of their last 14 Premier League meetings with Manchester City (W1 D1), conceding 39 goals against the Citizens in these games (2.8 per game).

19:55

Manchester City could go top tonight with a victory - depending on Chelsea's result with Watford - while Villa will be searching for the win that would move them up into the top half of the table.

19:50

Guardiola on his side's season as we enter December: "What they have done so far, especially in the [Champions League] group stage, which was so tough and in the Premier League after winning so much, I feel so grateful for the players. I know what it means to win the Premier League. Most teams after winning drop the next season. Look at the last ten winners. What happens the next season? They drop dramatically, but we are still there."

19:45

There are a few boos around Villa Park as Grealish begins his warm-ups but mostly applause as cheers for the £100m man. He hasn't had the best of starts at Manchester City and he'll be keen to prove a point tonight if he's called upon tonight by his manager.

19:40

Tonight represents Gerrard's biggest challenge so far in his early Villa career as he comes head-to-head against one of the best coaches in world football. "My views are very positive, watching him from afar,” Gerrard said about Guardiola. "It’s a well known fact that he’s one of the best managers in the world, not just currently but he has been for a number of years. I’m the lucky one, because I was able to compete against him as a player in my younger days, which was an experience, because he was a top footballer, but he’s also carried it on into his coaching career."

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola
19:35

City's XI is as formidable as ever but a lengthy injury list means Guardiola has had to name a host of youngsters on the bench including Luke Mbete, Cole Palmer, James McAtee, Romeo Lavia and Josh Wilson-Esbrand.

19:30

Grealish starts on the City bench on his return to Villa. Pep Guardiola makes three changes in total from the side that defeated West Ham on Sunday - Nathan Ake, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fernandinho come in for Aymeric Laporte, Kyle Walker and Ilkay Gundogan.

19:25

Gerrard makes two changes to the Aston Villa side that beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday as Douglas Luiz and Emiliano Buendia come in for Jacob Ramsey and Ashley Young.
