FT: Spurs 1-0 Man City. Son Heung-Min struck a second-half winner as Nuno Espirito Santo's era started with a victory over the champions. City, who gave a PL bow to Grealish, showed why they are in the market for a striker while their target, Harry Kane was not included in the Lilywhites squad.

Four minutes added.
- OffPierre-Emile HøjbjergTottenham Hotspur
- OnCristian RomeroTottenham Hotspur
SPURS CHANGE: Romero comes on for his debut in place of Hojbjerg.
City continue to probe. De Bruyne is at the heart of their best work but Spurs and Lloris are mopping it all up when it comes into the box at the moment. Can they manufacture one big chance late in the day?
SAVE! De Bruyne lets fly from 25 yards out but Lloris watches it all the way and pushes it to safety.
- OffJaphet TangangaTottenham Hotspur
- OnMatt DohertyTottenham Hotspur
SPURS CHANGE: Doherty on for Tanganga.
Nuno must be delighted with this display. Pep has plenty to ponder.
City attempt to pick out Cancelo on the edge of the box from a corner, but it's too high and he ends up ballooning a header over the top. He clearly wanted to strike a volley there.
- OffRiyad MahrezManchester City
- OnKevin De BruyneManchester City
CITY CHANGE: De Bruyne on for Mahrez.

- OnOleksandr ZinchenkoManchester City
CITY CHANGE: Zinchenko on for Mendy.

Grealish flashes a shot straight at Lloris after a lovely through ball from Jesus had found him on the left side of the area.
City only half clear a free kick from the right but Lucas Moura's shot on the turn is well blocked. How Spurs would love the cushion of that second goal.
City doing a good job of showing Kane just why they need a striker here. Spurs have wasted some situations he'd have loved to be in the middle for too.
- OffRaheem SterlingManchester City
- OnGabriel JesusManchester City
CITY CHANGE: Jesus on for Sterling.
It's a well worked free kick. Gundogan works it wide to Cancelo who drills a low ball into the six-yard box, but Torres somehow can't convert.
City have a free kick in a central area 30 yards out. Mahrez, Mendy and Gundogan are over the ball.
- Yellow cardLucas MouraTottenham Hotspur
Lucas Moura booked for a foul on Grealish.
City started this match brilliantly but there's no doubt Tottenham have been the better team in this second half.
Plenty of debate going on over on that City bench between Pep and his coaching staff. How long until he makes a change?
VIDEO: Son breaks the deadlock!
It should be two! Spurs carve City open on the break once more. It's fed to Bergwijn on the left and he bears down on Edersen before flashing a shot into the side netting.
STAT: Son Heung-min has scored seven goals in all competitions against Manchester City, including in all four meetings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A penny for your thoughts, Harry?
- GoalHeung-Min SonTottenham Hotspur
GOAL! Son cuts in from the right past Ake and rifles a low shot into the far corner after another superb counter attack involving Lucas Moura and Bergwijn.
A dangerous Tottenham attack ends with Lucas Moura jumping ahead of the better placed Alli and failing to get enough on a header from Tanganga's tempting cross.
Fernandinho slaps his hands in frustration as he drags a dreadful shot well off target from long range.
Son rises well to flick on a long ball but there's no-one there to chase it...
DID YOU KNOW? City are still hoping to set a new top-flight record of 11 successive victories in their opening match of the season, surpassing Aston Villa's run from 1891-92 to 1900-01.
End to end! Gundogan has an attempt blocked and Spurs surge up field. Lucas Moura joins the attack late but drills a 25-yard shot wide from a central area.
VIDEO: Chance of the first half? Look away now Riyad...
Alli picks the pocket of Fernandinho and Spurs counter once more. It'd fed to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg on the right side of the box but his miscued shot is blocked to safety.
- 2nd Half
KICK OFF! City get us back underway.
- End of 1st Half
HT: Spurs 0-0 Man City.
One minute added.
Grealish takes aim from just inside the Spurs area but sees his shot blocked. Fernandinho tries to follow up from distance but his effort is way off target.
Impressed with this man so far?
Spurs cause trouble for City once again on the break. This time Son doesn't over-elaborate and curves a 20-yard shot just wide of Ederson's left-hand post.
Bergwijn holds off Mahrez as he looks to lead a counter from a City corner. He drives deep into City territory but his ball to the left isn't good enough and the visitors are able to mop up the danger.
Tanganga with yet another foul - his fourth already - and the referee appears to have had enough. Or maybe not? He decides to call captain Lloris over. There's a discussion but no card. A final, final warning? Strange.
Mahrez will be disappointed with that. It was on the half volley but it was on his left foot and he was unmarked, so you'd have fancied him to bury it.
Mahrez skews well wide from 10 yards out after Sterling had clipped a ball into his path from the left side of the area.
Spurs seem reluctant to take the shots on with Son in particular guilty of turning down the opening. Once again he's fed into a good position on the break, but he opts to cut back inside on the left side of the box and City get men back to neutralise the attack.
It's been a much better spell for Tottenham after City had threatened to turn it into a game of attack v defence for the opening period of the contest.
Lucas Moura charges through the midfield and lays it wide for Bergwijn. The Dutchman cuts it back for Son, who can't get a clean shot away on the turn.
BLOCKED! Ederson comes to claim a free kick but doesn't get there. The ball drops for Lucas Moura on the far right of the box and he catches his shot brilliantly, but Gundogan is well placed on the line to hack it away.
CLOSE! Dias rises highest to get a vital flick on a devilish corner delivery from the left to avert the danger with a number of Spurs shirts flying in to attack it.
The hosts develop a decent situation on the break. It's worked to Bergwijn who attempts to cut inside and let fly from the left but sees his strike deflected behind for another corner.
A Spurs corner comes to nothing. They've struggled to create anything of note as of yet.
Ironic cheers from the Spurs faithful as the referee brings play back for a foul to the home side as Sterling was all over Tanganga.
NO PRESSURE, NUNO! This will be Nuno Espirito Santo's first league game as Spurs boss. Andre Villas-Boas is the only one of the Lilywhites’ last six bosses, including caretakers, not to win his first Premier League game at the helm.
Another foul on Grealish .He was used to that at Villa but can probably expect that to increase further in a City shirt!
Kane is apparently in the stadium. You wonder what the reaction would be if he showed his face to the crowd.
City continue to ask questions. This time Mahrez slaloms down the right and rifles a low ball into the six-yard box that Lloris smothers at his near post.
Skipp lunges in and times a perfect tackle on Sterling as one of England's Euro 2020 stars charged into the area from the left. All hands to the pump for the hosts so far, particularly down that flank.
Son breaks free down the right after an error from Mendy. He's one-on-one with Ake but after a couple of shimmies opts to go all the way back to the midfield. Cue groans from the crowd. He should have taken on the City defender and attacked the box.
Cancelo arrives late to pick up a weak clearance from Mahrez's teasing ball into the middle, but drills just wide of the far post. City are well on top here.
Fernandinho beats Lloris to Mendy's whipped cross from the left following a short corner, but sees his header fly just wide of an empty goal. The Spurs keeper was fortunate there.
The German curves an effort towards goal that clips Skipp's head and flashes just over the bar.
Gundogan over it...
Grealish offers a cameo of what he's all about with a surging run from deep. He's tripped just outside the box. City have a free kick 20 yards out, a fair bit left of centre.
A good omen for Nuno?
- 1st Half
KICK OFF! Spurs get this opening weekend contest up and running.
DID YOU KNOW? Spurs have only won five of their past 17 Premier League games without Harry Kane. One of those successes was a 2-0 triumph at home to Manchester City in February 2020.
What can we expect from Grealish today? Will Guardiola take him to the next level as many are predicting? The ex-Villa man seems to think so.
Pep Guardiola: “Every season, Leicester is a fantastic team, they could join Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, (Manchester) United, Liverpool and ourselves to be contenders. We start like everyone in that situation, I know how difficult all of the contenders are in this league, always has been, always is and always will be.”
Fernandinho on City’s depth: “You have to respect the manager's decision if you are in the starting XI and if you are not then you have to still respect it and work harder to get in. I think this is the level and the best way to keep the winning mentality and to challenge each other as well.”
Hugo Lloris on kicking off the new campaign against Man City: “I think it’s the best way to start. We are going to play the champions in front of our fans, that’s really something very special and we need to use it in the right way, try to use everything positive to bring the energy on the pitch and bring a tough game for them. We know we have the talent and then it’s just to make sure we are ready to compete, make sure we are strong as a team, we need to believe, even more than before, in ourselves, and of course it’s going to be a big test as our first game.”
Manchester City season preview: Without a recognised striker aside from Gabriel Jesus at this present moment, can Man City go on to defend their crown? We take a closer look at Pep Guardiola’s side.
Tottenham Premier League 2021-22 preview: Tottenham were once a middling team with dreams of muscling in on the elite. It might only be months before they are there again, according to Ben Snowball.
So, no Kane but this whole saga will slightly overshadow this contest today. It'll be referred to during the action and will no doubt dominate the post-match chat.
Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo on Kane: “He needs to work (on his fitness following a late return post-Euro 2020). He needs to keep on working until he's ready to help the team. He doesn't need too many sessions. He needs to be fit." Asked by Sky Sports if he’d be at the game, Nuno added: "He worked in the morning, I don't know what he's going to do.”
More on the headline news that involves the absence of Kane shortly, but a few lines on City first.
Grealish makes his PL bow for the Citizens while Kevin de Bruyne is amongst the substitutes. The Belgian has been recovering from the ankle injury sustained in his country's quarter final defeat to Italy at Euro 2020.
John Stones is on the bench and does not partner Ruben Dias at the heart of the defence. Instead, Nathan Ake is given that role despite his high-profile error in the Community Shield loss to Leicester. Gabriel Jesus and Rodri are also subs.
