A Callum Wilson brace alongside goals from Joelinton and Jacob Murphy saw Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side to a 4-1 win against Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League. The win leaves Newcastle in third spot in the table on 62 points, some eight points clear of Aston Villa in fifth having played a game less. Erik ten Hag's Manchester United are in fourth spot.

Newcastle United strengthened their push for a top-four finish with a commanding 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Everton at Goodison Park.
After an intense, fast Everton start, Newcastle took the lead against the run of play through Callum Wilson.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the ball in the net for Everton on the stroke of half-time, but VAR confirmed he had drifted offside in the build-up.
Newcastle scored two quick-fire goals in the 71st and 75th minute through Joelinton and Wilson to all but put the game to bed.
Dwight McNeil pulled a goal back for Newcastle when his corner went straight in as Newcastle fell asleep, but they made up for it instantly when Alexander Isak put the ball on a plate for Jacob Murphy to tap home.
While Newcastle have held onto third place and bolstered their chances of playing Champions League football, Everton are winless in five and remain 19th.
Sean Dyche couldn’t have asked for much more from his side after a fast and energetic start to the game, but Everton struggled to create any clear-cut chances.
Newcastle started shakily, but once Everton’s early flurry had passed Eddie Howe’s side were able to flex their muscles and take their game up a gear.
Against the run of play, Joelinton burst down Newcastle’s left wing before he cut inside and struck low which Jordan Pickford managed to palm away, but only into the path of Wilson who was on red alert as he poked the ball into an unguarded net.
Everton had the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time when Calvert-Lewin chased onto McNeil’s through ball before dinking over Nick Pope, but he had made his run too early and the assistant referee promptly raised his flag.
Joe Willock had an early chance in the second half to double Newcastle’s lead, but James Tarkowski made a vital interception in the six-yard box with Pickford beaten.
As the game approached the final 20 minutes, Newcastle had their tails up as Everton began to flatten, and the visitors took firm control of the game.
Willock worked his way down the left and beyond Ben Godfrey as he raced to the byline before dinking a cross back for Joelinton, who headed home for Newcastle's second.
Newcastle had the game more or less wrapped up when Bruno Guimaraes punched the ball into Wilson's feet on the edge of the box, before he took a touch, opened up his body, and curled a delicious strike into the top right corner for his second and Newcastle’s third.
McNeil’s corner flashed across Pope’s six-yard box and straight in for what was sure to be a consolation goal, before Alexander Isak produced a moment of magic before setting up Murphy who tapped in at the back post.

TALKING POINT - NEWCASTLE EDGE TOWARDS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RETURN, EVERTON IN BIG TROUBLE

What a difference a year makes. This time last year, Newcastle were battling to avoid the drop after their takeover, and since Eddie Howe’s arrival, they have gone from strength to strength and have surely confirmed their return to the Champions League, 20 years after they last appeared in the competition.
It’s a crisis in the opposite dressing room though, as Everton face relegation from the top flight for the first time since 1950/51. They’ve enjoyed one of the longest runs in England’s first division having been in the league since 1954/55, but that historic run could be coming to an end unless they pull off something special with five games to go.
They are only two points from safety so they’re not down and out just yet, but time is running out and they haven’t won in five, with a tricky run coming up including games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - CALLUM WILSON (NEWCASTLE)

Two more goals for Wilson tonight will surely be giving Eddie Howe a real selection headache, which isn’t a bad thing. He kept the brilliant Isak out of the side against Everton, and although the Swede came on and did excellently, Wilson showed why he deserves to be in the side.
He has 13 goals and four assists in 25 games for Newcastle this season and is in excellent form as he looks to get the Magpies over the line.
