MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES
This Ronaldo saga looks set to run and run, and his placement on the bench today might suggest that it's a decision not based solely on fitness. If Ten Hag is going to have a decent shot at reshaping United from the ground up, then Ronaldo's seemingly imminent departure is laced with symbolism in that regard. If/when Ronaldo does leave, and if/when a new striker and midfielder come in, then it starts to look more look a fresh start than a compromise.

TEAM TALK
United you sense aren't done in the transfer market yet, so the planned overhaul of style and culture is still a work in progress. There are two debuts in a familair looking set of personnel today though, as Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen come into the side. Cristiano Ronaldo is on the bench. That's understandable, given his lack of pre-season action, but will his last appearance as a United player be in a cameo in the second half?
Brighton look to be going with three at the back, with former United striker Danny Welbeck the lone striker in a 3-4-2-1. Levil Colwill, a loanee from Chelsea signed in the week, is on the bench today.

NEW BROOMS
Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to live coverage of Manchester United’s fifth shy at adequately replacing Sir Alex Ferguson. The Erik ten Hag era gets going this afternoon, amid the dawn-like rush of hope that is a new Premier League season. Facing United today are Brighton and Hove Albion, who have some shoes of their own to fill; manager Graham Potter waved goodbye to Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella in the summer, and a reshaped team are looking to emulate or even better last season’s impressive ninth place finish.
