Matheus Nunes’ stunning first half goal earned Wolverhampton Wanderers a valuable win against Chelsea at Molineux Stadium on Frank Lampard’s managerial return. The Wolves midfielder struck on 31 minutes to lift Julen Lopetegui’s side to 12th in the Premier League and four points clear of the relegation zone. Chelsea remain 11th and are now winless in four games.

‘You have to have more aggression’ - Lampard looking for more from Chelsea after Wolves defeat

Wolves beat lacklustre Chelsea 1-0 thanks to a Matheus Nunes stunner.
Wolves, who came into the match as the joint-lowest scorers in the Premier League, started the game brightly and knitted together some promising attacks but really lacked conviction in the final third.
Julen Lopetegui's side took the lead after 31 minutes thanks to a moment of pure magic from Matheus Nunes. The ball bounced up for the Portugal international who rifled his effort on the volley past Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the top corner. It was the 27-year-old's first Premier League goal for Wolves.
Kepa was needed just a few minutes later when Diego Costa found space inside the box before firing an effort on goal but the Spanish 'keeper stood up well to deny the former Chelsea man.
Chelsea emerged in the second half with much more intensity and attacking intent, firing crosses into the box and forcing Wolves to defend in their own box.
For all of Chelsea's possession in the second half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances to really work Jose Sa and ultimately finished the match with just one shot on target. Frank Lampard has a job on his ends getting goals from this Chelsea side who have now fired blanks in three consecutive matches.

TALKING POINT - STANDING UP TO BE COUNTED

This result feels like it could be a turning point for Wolves this season. They came into the game on 28 points, one above the relegation zone and with one win from their last seven Premier League matches. 90 minutes later and they sit in 12th position on 31 points. Lopetegui's side really needed a win like this to give themselves and their supporters renewed optimism and belief going into the final stretch of fixtures. Wolves have played some tough fixtures recently against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea but with games coming up against Brentford, Leicester City and Crystal Palace, they will fancy their chances of pulling off a couple more big wins.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - MATHEUS NUNES (WOLVES)

He worked incredibly hard without the ball too, winning 10 duels, making five tackles and one clearance. He fought for everything and his first goal for Wolves in the Premier League was a moment of pure excellence.
