Tributes have been paid to former Cordoba midfielder Patrick Ekeng, who passed away on Friday at the age of 26.
Ekeng played for Los Blanquiverdes in the 2014-15 season, making 14 appearances and scoring once, having signed from Lausanne and left when the team was relegated. A Cameroon international, Ekeng joined Dinamo Bucharest in January.
The Guardian reports Ekeng entered the game against Viitorul Constanta as a second half substitute but collapsed in the 70th minute, seven minutes after he was brought on.
Ekeng was taken to a local hospital but died less than two hours later, a heart attack the reported cause.
“Dinamo tonight lost footballer Claude Patrick Ekeng forever. On behalf of all of Dinamo, sincere condolences to the bereaved family. God rest his soul,” a statement on Dinamo’s Facebook page read.
“There are no words to express our sorrow at the death of Patrick Ekeng. We mourn your loss. We will never forget you,” Cordoba wrote.
