Russia name Stanislav Cherchesov as new head coach

The 52-year-old, who led Polish side Legia Warsaw to the domestic double last season, will take over from Leonid Slutsky after his appointment was approved by the executive committee of the Russian Football Union on Thursday.

Slutsky resigned from the post following Russia's disappointing showing at Euro 2016, where they were eliminated after finishing bottom of Group B behind Wales, England and Slovakia.

Cherchesov, who has signed a two-year contract to take Russia through to the 2018 World Cup on home soil, said he was not looking to spark a "revolution" in the national team, but to try and gain "dignity and respect".

He told a press conference, quoted on www.rfu.su: "I will be brief, because [as a coach] you have to work more than talk. I am glad that the choice fell on me.

"I'm completely aware of what to expect. I will do my job with dignity, and with a smile."

He added: "Drastic measures mean a revolution, and as history tells us, the revolution did not bring any positive results. For starters I need to talk with everyone and then make concrete steps. But I can say that the first thing to do, and I said this to the executive committee, is to stop complaining and underestimating ourselves.

"It is necessary to gain dignity and respect. It is necessary to realistically assess where we really are at the moment."

Cherchesov, a former international goalkeeper with Russia, counts Dynamo Moscow, Amkar Prem, Spartak Moscow and Austrian side Wacker Tirol among the other clubs he has coached.
