Rumours that the Italy international would pen a new deal have been circulating for several weeks, despite a slow start to the season in which Gilardino is still yet to score.

The 24-year-old signed for the Rossoneri in 2005 in a big move from Parma, but the club were keen to bind the player to the San Siro on a longer term contract than the one he originally signed.
