Jose Mourinho was sent off as Roma fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at basement side Cremonese, missing the chance to climb into second place in Serie A.
Daniel Ciofani’s 83rd-minute penalty proved to be the difference between the sides, as Cremonese claimed their first league win of the season and their first in the top-flight since March 1996.
The hosts took a one-goal advantage into the interval thanks to Frank Tsadjout’s half-volley.
Mourinho was shown his marching orders for dissent just minutes into the second half and had to watch from the stands as Roma equalised with their first shot on target, Leonardo Spinazzola finishing coolly from a Gianluca Mancini ball over the top.
But Cremonese were to have the final say when David Okereke was brought down by the on-rushing Rui Patricio and Ciofani kept his cool to dispatch his spot-kick and seal all three points for his side.
The result keeps Roma behind rivals Lazio in fifth as they spurn the opportunity to go level on points with second-placed Inter. Cremonese, meanwhile, leapfrog Sampdoria into 19th with their historic win.
