Football news - Wolves stun Manchester United with inspired FA Cup performance

Wolves booked a spot in the FA Cup semi finals for the first time since 1998 as they claimed a famous 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Molineux.

Second half goals from Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota did the damage as the hosts deservedly punished the lacklustre visitors, who slumped to their second defeat in a row.

Marcus Rashford pulled one back deep into stoppage time, but it was far too little, too late in what was arguably the poorest display of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's caretaker tenure so far.

The visitors dominated the first period but struggled to carve out any clear-cut openings. Indeed, the Red Devils were left grateful to Sergio Romero for keeping Wolves at bay on the counter as he produced fine stops to deny Jota and Jimenez before the double-act struck in the final 20 minutes of the contest.

VAR was involved late in the day as a red card shown to Victor Lindelof for a sliding challenge on Jota was down-graded to a caution.

Wolves will now turn their attention to Sunday's draw for the last four, with the tie set to be played at Wembley on the weekend of April 6/7. United will look to regroup over the international break before a league clash at home to Watford, while Wolves visit Burnley on Saturday March 30.

A great night in a fine season for Wolves. Nuno Espirito Santo continues to do a superb job at Molineux. From Championship glory last year to the fine football that has seen them rise to seventh place in the top-flight this term, he deserves much praise for his tactics and player recruitment.

And now this. A famous FA Cup victory that sees them heading to Wembley. Man City remain clear favourites for the trophy, but Wolves fans will allow themselves to dream of a first cup success since 1960, particularly if they can avoid Pep Guardiola's men in the last four.

As for United, this was undoubtedly a major blow for Solskjaer. The FA Cup was their most realistic hope of landing a trophy this term, but they were strangely out of sorts. They remain in the Champions League and are still fighting for a top-four finish, but it will be interesting to see how they respond to the setback of two straight defeats when they return after the international break.

Raul Jimenez (Wolves). Tirelessly led the line and was a real thorn in the side of United's defenders. Capped it off by taking his tally to 15 for the season with the all-important opener.

38' - MAN UNITED PENALTY SHOUT! Dalot's left-foot effort from the edge of the box hits Jonny on the arm and flies behind. United appeal for the spot kick, but the referee and VAR aren't interested.

43' - WOLVES CHANCE! Romero flies off his line and makes a crucial stop to deny Jota after Smalling's error in the midfield had allowed Neves to split the United defence and send him clear.

47' - MAN UNITED CHANCE! United are quick out of the traps and almost snare the lead. Rashford charges on to a loose ball in the midfield and bursts beyond Coady before seeing a shot from the right side of the area flash wide of the near post.

54' - WOLVES CHANCE! Jimenez meets a right-wing corner but sees his bullet header tipped on to the crossbar by Romero.

70' - GOAL! Wolves 1-0 Man United. Moutinho wriggles past three into the penalty area from the left and feeds it into Jimenez. The forward seems to have missed his chance to shoot, but twists and battles for it before firing a low shot beyond Romero.

76' - GOAL! Wolves 2-0 Man United. It's two! Jota drives at Shaw as Wolves break from a United corner. He powers beyond the United left back and fires a low effort beyond Romero at his near post.

84' - VAR OVERTURNS RED CARD! Lindelof is shown a straight red for sliding into a challenge on Jota. It's referred to VAR and it's downgraded to a yellow.

90+5' - GOAL! Wolves 2-1 Man United. Rashford drills a low shot into the corner when he spins on to Shaw's cut back from the left. It's surely too little, too late though.

Each of Wolves' last six goals in all competitions have been scored by either Raul Jimenez (4) or Diogo Jota (2).

Wolves have won three consecutive FACup games for the first time since February 2003.
