The statement, on the club's official website, did not provide any further information.
However, the CNN Turk television channel said former Besiktas coach Gordon Milne was in Istanbul for talks with the club's management.
Besiktas sacked Vicente del Bosque, the former Real Madrid coach, in January after less than eight months in the job.
Calimbay was a former Besiktas captain, revered by the club's supporters, but fans booed the team on Sunday when they only managed a draw at home to Kayserispor.
Besiktas are due to play English Premier League side Bolton Wanderers on Thursday in the group stages of the UEFA Cup.
