Football news - UEFA Nations League final group standings: Promotion, relegation, finalists

We look at how the land lies in UEFA’s newest competition, with Nations League results and final group standings.

Just a brief reminder of how this all works. Every UEFA nation is split into four leagues with each league containing four groups of either three or four teams.
Every team plays each other home and away and the top team of each group goes into the league play-offs. The winners of each league's play-off qualify for Euro 2020, unless of course they’ve already qualified through the separate qualification process, then their place goes to a lower-ranked team.
Oh, and there’s promotion and relegation as well as an overall champion who will come from the top league.

League A Overview

Qualified for finals: Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, England
Relegated: Germany, Iceland, Poland, Croatia

The Netherlands reached the Nations League finals after coming from two goals down to seal a dramatic 2-2 draw in Germany. Quincy Promes and Virgil van Dijk scored in the final five minutes to cancel out Timo Werner and Leroy Sane's first-half goals.
The Dutch finished above France courtesy of a better head-to-head record. Germany have been relegated.
The Netherlands finished top of Group A1

Switzerland turned qualification in the group on its head with a stunning 5-2 win against Belgium in the final group match, which sent them through.
Roberto Martinez's side were sitting pretty at the top with three wins from three heading into the final game and were 2-0 up at one point. However, Haris Seferovic netted a hat-trick as Switzerland came from behind to seal their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League with a stunning win.
Iceland were relegated and the only nation in League A to lose all their matches.

Portugal secured top spot in Group 3 with their 0-0 draw in Italy on Saturday night then secured their unbeaten record with a 1-1 draw in Tuesday night's dead rubber against Poland.
Poland were the first team to be relegated from League A after they suffered back-to-back home defeats to Portugal and Italy - Cristiano Biraghi's injury-time winner ensuring their demotion.

Group 4 came down to a dramatic showdown at Wembley as England and Croatia battled it out for top spot - and to avoid relegation.
Harry Kane's last-minute goal gave England the result they needed to seal their place in the finals.
Spain started with impressive back-to-back wins but collapsed in successive 3-2 defeats to England and Croatia to finish second.
Group 4

League B Overview

Promoted, and in provisional Euro 2020 play-off: Ukraine, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark
Relegated: Slovakia, Turkey, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland

Ukraine have been promoted despite a 4-1 loss at the hands of Slovakia.
Slovakia were relegated after they were beaten 1-0 by the Czech Republic after Patrik Schick's first-half lob.
Ukraine prevailed in Group B1

Group 2

Round 2
  • Russia 0-0 Sweden

Round 3
  • Turkey 0-1 Sweden
  • Sweden 2-0 Russia
Sweden won promotion to League A with a 2-0 home win against Russia in the final match of the group. The 2018 World Cup hosts lost top spot after Sweden's head-to-head record was superior.
Turkey were relegated and only managed one win in their campaign which was against group winners Sweden.
Group B2

Northern Ireland suffered a miserable campaign as the only nation in League B to lose all their matches and were relegated.
Bosnia and Herzegovina held off Austria to win promotion after remaining unbeaten.

Round 2
  • Republic of Ireland 0-0 Denmark

Round 3
  • Wales 1-2 Denmark
  • Denmark 0-0 Ireland
Denmark secured promotion with a 2-1 victory in Cardiff.
Ireland had been relegated with one point from their opening three games which meant the stalemate in their final match against the Danes carried little meaning.

League C Overview

Promoted and in provisional Euro 2020 play-off: Scotland, Finland, Norway, Serbia
Relegated: Estonia, Cyprus*, Slovenia, Lithuania
*Cyprus were relegated despite being in the same group as Slovenia due to the fact that Group C1 only consisted of three nations whereas the other League C groups comprised of four nations. Cyprus moved down to League D as they were the third-place nation with the worst record (not counting results against fourth-placed finishers).

Israel were in pole position in Group 1 after back-to-back wins in the October fixtures - but promotion was in Scotland's hands heading into the final match after they stuck four past Albania.
Scotland clinched promotion to League B in a nail-biting climax against Israel. Celtic's James Forrest scored a hat-trick as Alex McLeish's men won 3-2 in the group finale at Hampden Park.
Albania avoided relegation to League D as Cyprus had an inferior record (not counting results against fourth-placed finishers).
Group C1

Finland held off Hungary to win promotion. In the final round of games, Hungary's 2-0 win against Finland coupled with Greece's 1-0 loss against Estonia saw the Hungarians up into second - with Estonia relegated.

Norway pipped Bulgaria to promotion on the final night of matches after beating Cyprus 2-0 thanks to a brace from Ola Kamara. Bulgaria needed to better that scorelines to usurp the Norwegians but they could only muster a 1-1 draw at home to already-relegated Slovenia.
Cyprus joined Slovenia in League D as they had the worst record of all the third-placed finishers in League C (not counting results against fourth-placed finishers).
Norway were the winners of Group C3

Serbia guaranteed promotion with a 4-1 victory in their final group game against Lithuania.
Romania remained unbeaten but missed out on top spot.
Lithuania were relegated and the only nation in League C to lose all their matches.

League D Overview

Promoted and in provisional Euro 2020 play-off: Georgia, Belarus, Kosovo, Macedonia

Already-promoted Georgia dropped their first points of the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Andorra. Kazakhstan drew 1-1 against Latvia, though neither team can be promoted. In the final round of matches, Georgia capped a fine group-stage campaign with a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan while Andorra and Latvia played out a stalemate.
Georgia were already confirmed as winners of Group D1

Luxembourg had to beat Moldova in their final match and hope Belarus lost to San Marino to gain promotion. Neither happened in the final round of games, meaning that Belarus are promoted.
San Marino were the only nation in League D to lose all their matches.

Kosovo ended Azerbaijan's unbeaten run with a huge 4-0 home win in the Group D3 finale. Kosovo were promoted to League C with a dominant record as they scored 15 goals in their campaign and only conceded two.

Ilija Nestorovski scored twice as Macedonia gained promotion to League C with a 4-0 win over Gibraltar in the last round of matches. That result meant Armenia's 2-2 draw in Liechtenstein was immaterial.
