July 9
World Cup
1950 - The tournament in 1950 saw the winner of four groups progress to a final round-robin round. On July 9, hosts Brazil hammered Sweden 7-1 in front of a crowd of 138,000 in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium to get off to the perfect start. Ademir bagged four goals for Brazil, while Chico netted a double and Maneca also found the net, with Sune Andersson scoring for Sweden. Seven days later Brazil only needed to draw with Uruguay, playing in their first tournament since winning the inaugural event in 1930, to lift the trophy but fell to a shock 2-1 defeat to finish runners-up.
1994 - In possibly the game of the tournament, Brazil took a two goal lead courtesy of Romario and Bebeto before the Dennis Bergkamp and Aron Winter hit back for the Netherlands. But Brazil were not to be denied and Branco popped up nine minutes from time to fire the South Americans into the last four. Brazil went on to defeat Sweden 1-0 in the semi-finals and beat Italy on penalties after a 0-0 stalemate to win their fourth World Cup.
2006 - It took Italy another 12 years to win their fourth tournament, when Marcello Lippi guided the Azzurri to the final where they beat France on penalties after the match ended 1-1. Zidane's penalty put France ahead after just seven minutes but it took only another 12 minutes for Materazzi to equalise. The two later locked horns when Zidane, in his last match before retiring, head-butted Materazzi in extra-time and was sent off.
