England bounced back from losing a late equaliser to beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties and secure a World Cup quarter final meeting against Sweden.
Eric Dier stuck away the winning spot kick in the shootout after a fine save from Jordan Pickford to send Gareth Southgate’s side into the final eight of the tournament. But they were made to work for it.
Harry Kane’s 57th-minute penalty looked set to clinch the win in 90 minutes for the Three Lions, with England holding that lead until the fourth minute of stoppage time. Until then, Colombia hadn’t posed much of a goal threat and so there appeared to be little for England to worry about.
This all changed when Yerry Mina squeezed home a header from a corner kick with just seconds left to play, sending the match into extra time. Extra time was a tense affair as both sides prepared for the inevitable shootout decider, but it was England who came out on top in the end.
England blinked first in the penalty shootout with Jordan Henderson seeing his effort saved by David Ospina but Colombia missed the next two - Mateus Uribe hit the bar before Carlos Bacca saw his penalty saved - allowing Dier the opportunity to send England through.

TALKING POINT - Whisper it… is this England’s World Cup?

They have finally won a World Cup knockout game, 12 years since the last one, so it’s fair to ask at this point - is this England’s tournament? They will face Sweden for a place in the semi finals, and should they get past that test, Croatia or Russia. The draw has opened up for Southgate’s side and now having won their first ever penalty shootout at a World Cup there will be a real belief about this group of players. It’s reasonable to predict that England could go far.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Harry Kane (England)

As if it needed confirmation, this was another illustration of how Kane is a truly world class talent for England. He put away his penalty kick in normal time, and then again in the shootout, but Kane was excellent throughout. Colombia struggled to deal with him from start to finish, although he could have caused even more damage had he remained up top rather than dropping deep when Jamie Vardy came on. Nonetheless, Kane is becoming the star of this World Cup.

KEY MOMENTS

17’ KANE... ROOF OF THE NET! Great movement from Lingard and England opens up space for Trippier to get the cross to the back post, but Kane couldn't quite direct his header on target and it loops on to the roof of the net.
40’ HEADBUTT? So the England players are calling for the VAR to be used. They are suggesting that Henderson was head-butted by Barrios. They are going to review this.
41’ BARRIOS SHOWN YELLOW! A yellow card... for a headbutt? That's a strange one. Barrios enters the book. He is lucky there.
54’ PENALTY KICK TO ENGLAND! The referee has pointed to the spot for some holding from Sanchez on Kane. What was the Colombian doing?
57’ GOAL! Colombia 0-1 England: Such composure from Kane! He had to wait such a long time to take that penalty kick, but when the time came he calmly sent his shot right down the centre of the goal and Ospina guessed the wrong way.
83’ BIG LET OFF FOR ENGLAND! Walker was too complacent on the ball. He got caught out dithering and Cuadrado is presented with the shooting chance! He fires over the target, though!
93’ WHAT A STRIKE, WHAT A SAVE! Incredible! Uribe has just struck a snapshot from about 30 yards out! But Pickford has clawed out a magnificent save to deny him! What a stop.
94’ GOAL! Colombia 1-1 England: Colombia have scored a stoppage time equaliser! Sensational! The goalkeeper was up from the back, Mina got above his marker and squeezes the header off the underside of the bar, over Trippier and into the back of the net.

114’ INCHES WIDE! So close to a second goal for England! Rose got in behind the Colombian defence, good pass by Henderson, and he sends his low drive right across the face of goal and wide of the far post.
116’ FREE HEADER! Oh that was a chance for Dier. A real chance. He was free about eight yards out, but he got his leap all wrong and heads over the crossbar. He should have hit the target.
ENGLAND PENALTY SAVED! Ospina guessed the right way and makes the stop. It was a good penalty by Henderson as well! Colombia 3-2 England from six.
COLOMBIA MISS! Uribe strikes the underside of the bar and it bounces away. Back on serve, so to speak. Colombia 3-2 England from seven pens.
COLOMBIA PENALTY SAVED! Bacca sees his spot kick saved by Pickford! He stood tall and stopped it. Colombia 3-3 England after nine pens.
ENGLAND SCORE! Dier just about squeezes the spot kick past Ospina and England are into the quarter finals of the World Cup! They will face Sweden! ENGLAND ARE THROUGH!
