The run goes on! England are through to the semi finals of the 2018 World Cup and in truth, it was actually comfortable for Southgate's side. They didn't reach top form, but they didn't really have to. Maguire, Pickford and Trippier were the standouts for the Three Lions. Sweden didn't really offer much at all.
- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Sweden 0-2 England. ENGLAND ARE INTO THE WORLD CUP SEMI FINALS!
- Yellow cardSebastian LarssonSweden
A yellow card for Larsson late on for fouling Kane in the dying moments.
England are just seconds away from a World Cup semi final, where they will face one of either Russia or Croatia, who play their quarter final later this evening. This has been comfortable.
Five minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
- OffRaheem SterlingEngland
- OnMarcus RashfordEngland
Sterling gets a nice ovation from the England fans and Rashford comes on in stoppage time.
TERRIBLE STRIKE! And that could be that for Sweden. It was Augustinsson who took the freekick from the edge of the box, but he got right over it and smashes the ball over the target.
Here's a chance for Sweden. They have won a freekick right on the edge of the England penalty box. This could be enough to give them a lifeline in this match. Larsson has the ability.
CONFUSION! Delph drives into the box, with it eventually popping out to Sterling. But the two players left it for each other and Sweden are gifted a goal chance when that was an England chance.
- Yellow cardJohn GuidettiSweden
And Guidetti also enters the book for... not sure what. Maybe he had a bit too much to say to the referee.
- Yellow cardHarry MaguireEngland
Maguire is shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away.
- OffEmil KrafthSweden
- OnPontus JanssonSweden
And Sweden also make their final change of the game, with Jansson coming on.
- OffJordan HendersonEngland
- OnEric DierEngland
Henderson comes off and he is replaced by Dier for the final six minutes of the match.
At this stage, one more goal would make the final few minutes of the match relaxed for England. As things stand, England just need to be wary that they don't let Sweden back in.
Sweden just haven't been able to deal with Trippier this afternoon. The Spurs man has been a star at this World Cup and his deliveries have been excellent in this game. What a player.
There's a bit of a running battle between Stones and Berg. They have been niggling at each other for a little while now, and things have spilled over into a full scale scuffle here.
WHAT A CROSS! That was begging for someone in an England shirt to convert inside the six yard box. Trippier fizzed it in from the right side, but Krafth did well to defend it for Sweden.
Sterling might have lacked finishing instinct in the first half, but some of his movement has been crucial for England this afternoon. He has been everywhere across the final third.
- OffDele AlliEngland
- OnFabian DelphEngland
Southgate makes a change, with Alli coming off to be replaced by Delph for the final 10 minutes or so.
Both Maguire and Pickford have been excellent for England in this match. Trippier is another who has shone throughout this tournament. Some very good performances.
England have 16 minutes to see out before they can look forward to a World Cup semi final. Some of these players are starting to look a little leggy, though. Changes to be made soon?
ANOTHER PICKFORD SAVE! Berg does well to control a pass that was played behind him, he turns and sends the snapshot towards goal. But Pickford does well to tip over his bar!
Sweden's only real hope seems to be from crosses into the England penalty area and so far the likes of Maguire and Stones have dealt with everything thrown at them so far.
Even when they don't have the ball, England are doing well to prevent Sweden from moving through the lines of midfield and attack. Sweden just can't go anywhere at the moment.
ALLI SHOT ON GOAL! The through pass from Sterling to try and get Kane in behind was cut out, but it fell to Alli on the edge of the box. His shot is blocked by Granqvist, though.
MAGUIRE BLASTS OVER! Just for a moment it looked like Maguire might grab a second goal. Kane's header across goal found the defender at the back post, but leaning back he blasts his shot high and wide.
- OffEmil ForsbergSweden
- OnMartin OlssonSweden
... and the second change sees Forsberg come off. That's a very curious change from Sweden.
- OffOla ToivonenSweden
- OnJohn GuidettiSweden
Here come a couple of Sweden changes. First it's Guidetti who comes off the bench...
Pickford has been excellent at this World Cup. A goal for Sweden would have changed the complexion of this match, but the Everton goalkeeper came up big once again for England.
WHAT A SAVE! Pickford has just saved England there. The play from Sweden in the box was excellent. Berg's backheel found Claesson, but his low shot was saved brilliantly by Pickford and the rebound was blocked.
It's actually England who are still pressing here. They look more likely to score a third than Sweden are to score a first! The Scandinavians are looking like a beaten team here.
That was so easy for England. The ball from Lingard to Alli at the back post was a good one, but the marking from Sweden was abysmal. They allowed Alli so much space to head home.
- GoalDele AlliEngland
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Sweden 0 England 2 (59 mins - Dele Alli). England have a two-goal lead! They are edging closer and closer to a World Cup semi final! Trippier plays it back to Lingard, who finds Alli at the back post completely unmarked and he heads past Olsen! Well-worked goal.
There's a feeling that England are just starting to ramp things up. They did that right at the end of the second half, and now they are camped on the edge of the Sweden box again.
Let's be honest, the quality in this game hasn't really been up to match. It hasn't been a good match, but England are ahead and they haven't faced all that much from Sweden.
MAGUIRE AGAIN! The England defender was up from the back for a freekick, he heads across goal, Sterling's overhead kick comes back to him, then Maguire's second header is cleared under the crossbar.
Was that a cross or a shot from Forsberg? The RB Leipzig man just seemed to spot Pickford off his line a little bit, but the ball was too deep and the keeper watched it drift over.
England seem to have settled again after a difficult start to the second half. They are knocking the ball around and Sweden seem to have reverted to their default of sitting deep.
There were some doubts over Pickford heading into this World Cup. He is the youngest starting keeper England have ever had at a major tournament, but he has risen to the challenge.
This is already much more positive from Sweden at the start of the second half. They are pushing higher up the pitch. This period is a really crucial point in this quarter final.
BIG PICKFORD SAVE! A warning for England. Berg beat Young at the back post and powered a header towards the goal, but Pickford got down really well to make the strong save!
Will we see a different Sweden in this second half? They will surely come out and attack a bit more given that they need a goal to save their World Cup hopes. More positive from them already.
So here is the fact of the matter - England are just 45 minutes away from the semi finals of the World Cup. They have a 1-0 lead and Sweden have caused very little problems so far.

- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Sweden 0-1 England. Maguire's goal is the difference between the two teams at the break. Not the greatest 45 minutes of football, but England were starting to ramp things up.
IT JUST WON'T GO IN! This time Sterling is onside from the pass from Henderson. Sterling's touch was great, he tries to round Olsen, he took too long to take the shot and the block is made!
WHAT A MISS... FLAG UP! Sterling stopped as he was played in, he thought he was offside. The flag stayed down, his shot was straight at Olsen... then the flag went up. His blushes are spared.
STERLING NEARLY IN! Oh, he was so close to being in! The weight on the ball from Trippier to Sterling was magnificent, but Lindelof did just enough to scramble the danger away.
For the first time, Forsberg gets on the ball in a dangerous position for Sweden. He was looking for the run of Berg inside the box, but Pickford's shout sees him claim it with authority.
STERLING CROSS! The Manchester City winger ran down the left channel to get on the end of a threaded pass and cross to the near post. It as half blocked, with Lingard's little backheel flick inside the box also blocked.
Alli has struggled to get into the game in this first half. There was a suggestion before the match that he toiling with an injury and what we have seen from him so far backs that up.
Make no mistake, this has been a low quality game in this first half. Neither Sweden nor England have taken a grip of things. But it's England who have the lead, so they won't care too much.
The crossing into the England penalty area from Sweden has been really poor. Krafth had the chance to cause a problem with a ball in there, but it was way, way too strong.
Sweden have the chance to get a freekick into the box from deep, but the delivery was poor and Maguire is there to clear. The Leicester City man is getting is head to everything!
While this has been far from an inspired start by England, Sweden have caused them no problems at all. Pickford hasn't had a save to make yet. Southgate must be pleased with that.
Set pieces have been key for England at this World Cup. They look so organised from freekicks and corner kicks, but this is also a strength of this Sweden side, so beware.
They have been far from their best, but England have the lead through Maguire. He has been one of England's more impressive players at this World Cup. What a header that was.
- GoalHarry MaguireEngland
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Sweden 0 England 1 (31 mins - Harry Maguire) England have taken the lead! What a header from Maguire! He powered in there and got on the end of a corner kick delivery to smash a header past Olsen in the Sweden goal! What a huge goal for the Three Lions.
England are using Trippier as often as they can down the right side, which isn't the worst idea, but so far the wing back has failed to find his best delivery. That one was too strong.
Now Sweden are knocking the ball around in their own half, with England sitting back. Is this a tactic from Southgate and his players to try and open up some space on the counter?
BERG IS OFFSIDE! Oh! England got away with one there. Maguire was beaten by a long ball over the top, with Berg getting in behind. The flag was up for offside, but he was in his own half!
TRIPPIER CROSS! This is a bit better from England, partiuclarly down the right side of the pitch. Trippier gets the cross into the near post, but Olsen gathers. Kane was waiting for it.
PENALTY CLAIM! Sterling asks the referee for a penalty kick, but it was half-hearted. The cross hit Forsberg's arm, but they were tucked into his body and it was from such close range.
Strangely, it seems that England are reluctant to cross the ball into the box. Trippier had the chance there, twice. He had teammates in the middle, but decided to play it back instead.
Sterling has been England's brightest hope so far in the opening 20 minutes of the match. Although that's not really saying much. It has been a low key start by the Three Lions.
KANE... DRAGGED WIDE! For the first time, England break through the Swedish defence. It was Sterling who caused the chaos, with Kane taking the shot. It flashes wide of the far post.
Good defending from Stones there. The ball was played down the channel for Toivonen to chase, but the England centre back came across and just shielded the ball out of play.
Lindelof has been excellent for Sweden at this World Cup. He endured a difficult first season at Manchester United, but he has shown his potential for his country over the past few weeks.
There are swatches of empty seats in the stadium in Samara for this game. Some estimates claim that there are only around 3,000 England fans at this match. Small support.
This has been a very cagey start to this match. Everyone looks nervous - Sweden, England, the fans, the officials. The first team to find their feet here will have an advantage.
STRUCK WELL! Claesson takes aim from about 25 yards out. The space opened up for him, but the ball flies over the crossbar. Pickford isn't happy with his defenders for giving him so much space.
STRAIGHT AT WALKER! England work the crossing position on the right side, with Walker slinging the ball into the box. But it's too close to the goalkeeper and Olsen catches.
This has been quite a nervy start from England. They have misplaced a few diagonal passes. They need to shake that tension out of their system. They still haven't found their feet properly.
It could be argued that against a team like Sweden, who will sit deep and absorb, England don't need three central defenders. But this system has worked for them so far, so Southgate has stuck with it.
Sweden, just like England, are strong on set pieces. They didn't make the most of that chance, though. The delivery from Larsson was way too deep, although the Swedes win a throw in.
ALLI THROUGH BALL! Krafth loses the ball to Alli inside the Sweden half. Alli was looking for the run of Kane, but the pass was slightly overhit and it dribbles through to Olsen.
On paper, England should win this game. They clearly have the better players, but Sweden are an excellent team unit, as they have shown at this World Cup and in qualification too.
Sterling drops deep to pick up the ball. We have seen that quite a lot from the Manchester City winger at this tournament. He plays as a number 10 for Southgate in this side, at times.
England are looking to take control of the game in the opening few minutes. They have the ball, although Sweden have surprised by pushing quite high on the defensive line in possession.
What a chance this is for these two teams. One of either Sweden or England will make the semi finals of the World Cup where they will face one of either Russia or Croatia. What an opportunity.
- 1st Half
The match is under way in Samara! It's Sweden against England in the quarter finals of the World Cup.
Yesterday, we saw France and Belgium move into the semi finals of the World Cup. Which one of Sweden and England will join them there? Just 10 minutes until the big kick off now.
England have beaten Tunisia, Panama and Colombia on their way to this quarter final. Sweden have knocked out Holland and Italy in qualification, Germany in the group and Switzerland in the last 16.
Of course, it should be noted that the draw has really opened up for England. If they are to make the final, they have to beat Sweden and then one of Croatia or Russia. What a chance.
I wonder if Loftus-Cheek might have been a good pick for this game. He opened up the opening group game against Tunisia. Sweden will sit deep and Loftus-Cheek's directness might have helped break them down.
This is a strong Sweden side. They line up pretty much as expected. Their defensive resolution has been key to their success at this World Cup so far. They will be tough to break down.
So the big team news for England is that, well, there is none. It's an unchanged team from Southgate. It had been speculated that Alli would drop out, but he's there in the lineup.
TEAM NEWS: Sweden - Olsen, Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson, Krafth, Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg, Claesson, Berg, Toivonen. /// England - Pickford, Maguire, Stones, Walkers, Trippier, Young, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Sterling, Kane.
