Full time: Russia 3-1 Egypt The hosts Russia have nine toes in the second round after a stirring victory over Egypt, who need a miracle to reach the last 16.

90'

Warda shoots tamely wide from the edge of the box. There will be four minutes of added time. Egypt knows this is over.

88'

Salah nicks the ball brilliantly on the edge of the Russia box, only to slice a half-volley well wide.

87'

Egypt will remember the 2018 World Cup as a nightmare that started the moment Sergio Ramos took Mo Salah for a walk in the Champions League final. His injury was a savage blow to a team who had such hopes for their first World Cup in 28 years. Sport is darn cruel sometimes.

Egypt make their last change: Kahraba on for Mohsen.

81'

A great chance for Russia on the break. Smolov finds Golovin, who inexplicably delays his shot and loses the ball.

80'

After a hairy few minutes, Russia again look pretty comfortable. They are going through to the last 16, probably to face either Portugal or Spain.

The superb Dzyuba, who has bullied Egypt all night, is replaced by Smolov.

78'

Egypt appeal for another penalty, but this time there's nothing doing. It was a wrestle between Kutepov and Mohsen, with both men dragging each other by the shirt. Anything could have been given there.

76'

A draw would keep Egypt alive, just about, but they would need to absolutely hammer Saudi Arabia and hope Uruguay beat Russia.

74'

Russia make a change, Kuziaev for Cheryshev. Meanwhile, Ignashevich heads a deep free-kick straight at Elshenawy.

GOAL! Russia 3-1 Egypt (Salah pen) Salah smacks an emphatic penalty high into the net. It's been a miserable tournament for him but at least he has a World Cup goal.

72'

PENALTY TO EGYPT! Salah is pulled down inside the area but the referee gives a free-kick outside the box. This is surely one for VAR. It started outside the area and continued inside the box. Yes, after a bit of deliberation a VAR penalty is given.

70'

A frustrated El-Said spanks a long-range shot into orbit.

Russia's opponents in the last 16 will be one of Portugal, Spain, Iran and Morocco. Russia v Ronaldo would be mildly entertaining.

57'

Trezeguet is booked for something or other.

56'

CHANCE FOR SALAH! A lofted ball into the area broke to Salah, but he couldn't get it out of his feet quickly enough and eventually his shot was blocked by Fernandes!

53'

Egypt look deflated, not just by the goal but also the manner of it. If it stays like this, they will be out of the tournament tomorrow afternoon unless Saudi Arabia avoid defeat against Uruguay.

50'
49'

I'd like to see a few more replays of the goal, but it looked like Dzyuba shoved Fathi towards the ball, which is why he sliced it into his own net. Whether the contact from Dzyuba was enough for a free-kick is debatable.

48'

Egypt realistically need two goals or they are out of the tournament.

Peep peep! Russia get the second half under way.

  • End of 1st Half
45'

Half time: Russia 0-0 Egypt A cagey, nervous half comes to an end. Mo Salah has done well for a man who is clearly unfit, but neither side has created many chances.

43'

A Russia corner is flung towards Dzyuba, who is wrestled to the floor. Nothing doing for Russia. Oh VAR where are thou?

42'

Lovely effort from Salah! He was half stopped by a tackle from Zhirkov on the edge of the box but pirouetted smartly to curl a snapshot this far wide of the far post. I thought it was in.

39'

Elneny's little chip is headed straight at Akinfeev by Mohsen, who didn't connect properly with his attempt. I think a free-kick had been given anyway.

38'

In other news...

37'

Russia have regressed a little after that promising start, though they still look dangerous when they dump crosses towards Dzyuba.

35'

Faith's deep cross is headed wide by Mohsen beyond the far post. It was a difficult chance, because the cross was just in front of him and so he couldn't get around the ball.

34'

Fine defending from Zhirkov! Abdelshafy's outside-of-the-foot cross from the left was headed on by Mohsen towards Salah, who was about to pounce at the far post when Zhirkov booted the ball behind for a corner.

33'

Egypt keep possession for a couple of minutes. They have had more of the ball in this half, though Russia seem happy to play like the away side.

30'

Though Egypt are the ones who need a win, I think they would take a 0-0 scoreline at half-time. The longer the game stays level, the more nervous Russia will get. What Egypt don't want to do is commit too early and be 2-0 down after an hour.

28'

Salah's performance so far has been promising - no more or less than that. Even at such a modest level of performance, he looks the most dangerous attacker on the pitch.

26'

A Cheryshev cross leads to a bit of head tennis in the area before Elshenawy claims the ball. Egypt do look vulnerable on crosses.

25'

Salah does well to make space and find Trezeguet, whose 25-yard shot is blocked.

23'

Gazinskii's left-wing cross just clears the head of the big striker Dzyuba. Egypt have a history of weakness on crosses that Russia are trying to exploit at every opportunity.

22'

Salah receives his first heavy tackle, from Zhirkov, but bounces to his feet. Salah is starting to look much livelier.

19'

A good effort from Cheryshev, who pings long-range shot just over the bar. I think Elshenawy had it covered but it was beautifully struck.

16'

GOOD EFFORT! Trezeguet almost gives Egypt the lead. He broke into the box from the left and shaped a lovely curler that drifted a couple of yards wide of the far post.

16'

In fact Mohsen's header took a deflection off a header, so Egypt win a second corner. Nothing comes of it but this is much better from the away side.

15'

An improving Egypt win their first corner down the left. El-Said swings it towards the near post, where Mohsen flashes a header just wide. That was a good effort under a lot of pressure.

13'

Salah is starting to see a bit more of the ball. He plays a nice one-two with El-Said and scurries into the box before being dispossessed.

11'

Russia continue to look much the more threatening side. Samedov's cross is brought down by Dzyuba, but his touch is slightly too heavy and Elshenawy claims.

8'

Mohsen heads behind for another corner. Russia have started this match excellently. The corner is played short to Zhirkov, who overhits his cross.

7'

I'm not sure Salah has touched the ball yet.

6'

Russia look very lively on the counter-attack. Golovin nicks possession 30 yards from goal, runs to the edge of the area and drags a low shot just wide of the far post. I think Elshenawy had it covered.

5'

Zobnin's shot deflects behind for the first corner...

4'

It poured down for a couple of hours in Saint Petersburg earlier today, though it is dry now. The pitch looks pretty slick.

3'

The early signs are that Egypt will have a lot of the ball, with Russia happy to play on the break.

2'

A promising break from Russia. Cheryshev's through ball takes a slight deflection and just wrong-foots Dzyuba, who would otherwise have been through on goal.

1'

Peep peep! Egypt, in white, get the game under way. Russia are in red.

18:57

After two rousing anthems - there are plenty of Egyptian fans in the stadium too - the players go through the pre-match handshakes. It's business time.

18:55

The players are in the tunnel, ready for the biggest game of their international careers - for another few days at least.

18:50
18:45

This feels like a surprisingly open World Cup, with few of the big sides impressing. This could be a year when we get an unlikely semi-finalist - maybe even one of those two teams.

18:35

Mo Salah did pass a fitness test before the game, though there has to be a doubt about whether his shoulder will stand up to what could be a bruising game.

18:30

A win tonight would take Russia to the cusp of the knockout stages. They haven't got out of their World Cup group since the break up over the Soviet Union in the early nineties.

18:25

The first set of group games produced 38 goals in 16 matches - it's been entertaining as only the World Cup can be, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

18:20

Some interesting news from the Brazil camp: Neymar left their training session early with an ankle injury. He was booted all over the place by Switzerland on Sunday night.

18:15

In case you missed it, Group H got off to a lively start today, with Japan beating Colombia 2-1 and Senegal overcoming Poland by the same scoreline.

18:10

Egypt lost their opening match 1-0 to Uruguay, whose winning goal came in injury time. They played fairly well in that game, but lacked the sparkle of Mo Salah. Russia’s goal difference means that Egypt probably need a win tonight, assuming all the teams in the group beat Saudi Arabia.

18:05

The hosts Russia started the tournament with that thumping win over Saudi Arabia. Their opponents were so poor that it’s hard to know what to make of Russia; this match should give us a much better idea.

18:00

The teams

Russia (4-2-3-1) Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Gazinskiy, Zobnin; Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev; Dzyuba.

Egypt (4-2-3-1) El Shenaway; Fathi, Hegazi, Ali Gabr, Abdel-Shafy; Elneny, Hamed; Salah, El-Said, Trezeguet; Marwan.

17:50

Team news: Mo Salah starts for Egypt! We don’t know how fit he is but there’s no point waiting for tomorrow, because it probably won’t come if Egypt lose tonight. Denis Cheryshev, who scored two lovely goals as substitute in Russia's 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia, starts on the left wing.

17:45

Hello and welcome to Eurosport's LIVE text commentary of the World Cup Group A clash between Russia and Egypt in Saint Petersburg. This is the start of the second round of group matches, the moment where things get really serious. A defeat tonight for Russia or particularly Egypt would leave them in serious danger of going out of the tournament.
