BRENDEN AARONSON
I'm not surprised he's not starting because I think the midfield three that is is Gregg Berhalter's preferred combination. But I'm certain he'd improve things, and I'd not be surprised to see him make a difference in the last half-hour.

Robert Page explains that he's gone for Wayne Hennessey in net, not Danny Ward, because Hennessey was brilliant against Ukraine in the playoff - his performance was the best Page has ever seen from a Wales keeper - and "has the jersey". In attack, meanwhile, it's Harry Wilson not Kiefer Moore because Page wants pace, which makes perfect sense. Asked about the One Love armband, he says the squad aren't pleased but he can't have his captain starting the game with a yellow card, which tells you how important people think this protest actually is: less important than that.

LET'S HAVE SOME TEAMS!

Wales, playing at their first World Cup since 1958, are a seriously solid outfit, which is why they're becoming a tournament staple. They missed out in Russia, but have made the last two Euros, reaching the semi-finals and last 16 – principally because they have, in Gareth Bale, one of the greatest international footballers of all-time. And I really, really mean that. USA, meanwhile bring all their usual physicality, but with a more youthful zest and creativity than previously. There's not much between the sides, so this should be an absolute belter.
