Spanish Grand Prix: Hamilton streaks home for 30th consecutive points finish

Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton got a clear start, and began to pull away from the pack from the off. Spinning cars and collisions further down the field meant the safety car came out straightaway, obviously preventing any overtaking, and allowing the Mercedes man to hold on tight.

Second place went to Valtteri Bottas, with Max Verstappen getting his first points finish of the year in third.

Kimi Raikkonen suffered an engine glitch about halfway through and was forced to retire his car; his team-mate Sebastian Vettel suffered from peculiar strategy and didn't even make the podium.

Four stars out of five. Hamilton was ten seconds in front of his team-mate by the time they were a third into the race, and just continued extending that advantage. Nobody looked like getting anywhere close to him, and barring a massive technical or mechanical failure, he never looked like losing; and nor did he really have very much to do.

"There's still a long way to go!" came the encouraging message from the Red Bull garage to Max Verstappen as half of the front of his car was hanging off following a shunt with Williams's Lance Stroll. The young Dutchman was sitting in third, and his team attempted to remind him that the Mercedes duo in front of him could experience tyre issues. It was textbook positive psychology, and it worked perfectly on a driver who has looked panicky and error-prone in recent weeks.

Lovely stuff in the middle of the pack as Carlos Sainz and Marcus Ericsson battled it out for P9.

A beautiful overtake from Fernando Alonso on Lap 44, after a spell under the strictures of the virtual safety car, swinging past Charles Leclerc who was defending eighth place valiantly.

Everyone on a one-stop strategy, including Hamilton and Bottas, must have been delighted with those early nine laps under the safety car - yes, a whole nine laps. Ferrari attempted an early undercut but found Vettel returning to the track just behind Kevin Magnussen's Haas, and suffered for it - yet again their decision-making seemed slightly off, attempting to second-guess Mercedes, and failing.

All credit to Force India's Sergio Perez. His colleague Esteban Ocon had a bad day at the office, but he stayed focused and worked his way up despite some more excellent defence from Leclerc.

An early exit for the second race running for Haas's Romain Grosjean, spinning across the track on the opening lap and taking Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly with him.

Gerard Pique popped in to visit Mercedes.

And Felipe Massa returned to his old stomping ground.
