"I'm just playing stress free," Axley told reporters.
The 32-year-old left-hander is almost playing blemish free as well having gone 40 holes without making a bogey after starting the tournament with three in his first four holes.
The Knoxville, Tennessee native has since played brilliant golf as he seeks his first PGA Tour title. Axley has never finished higher than 24th in a Tour event.
Three players were tied for second at 12-under, including Ted Purdy, who shot a 64 on Saturday. Purdy won the Byron Nelson Championship last year.
Tied with Purdy were Frank Lickliter who shot a 65 and Chris Riley (64). Dean Wilson was five shots behind the leader after a third-round 66.
