J.B. Holmes trailed by a shot at 10-under 132 after a 69 and tournament host Tiger Woods was hoping to make the cut after a closing birdie left him at even par 71 for the round and 141 for 36 holes at Riviera Country Club.
Half the field was just beginning the second round after rain affected play on both Thursday and Friday.
Former world number one Rory McIlroy had the low score among those finishing the second round, shooting a bogey free 63 that included eight birdies.
Thomas also had eight birdies to go with two bogeys while Australian Scott tracked seven birdies and a bogey.
Woods, playing the back nine first, dropped in a 24-foot birdie putt at Riviera's ninth hole to salvage a round that included five bogeys and an eagle. He was 10 shots behind the leaders. (Reporting by Gene Cherry in Raleigh, North Carolina, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
