GP2 launch Asian series

The Formula One feeder series will run alongside the all-new SpeedCar Series, in which former GP winners Johnny Herbert and Jean Alesi will race NASCAR-style machines on the Grand Racing Event.

GP2 Series boss Bruno Michel said: "Since it began in 2005, the GP2 Series has proved itself as the finishing school of motorsport, and has provided a platform that has launched the careers of many successful drivers into Formula One.

"By creating a package as entertaining as the GP2 Asia Series and putting it alongside the Speedcar Series, the Grand Racing events will strengthen the reputations of many young drivers."

It is unknown whether any of the existing GP2 teams are considering taking part in the Asian championship, which is due to support the Formula One race in Bahrain.
