Olympic champions Denmark were knocked out in the last 16 of the handball world championships when they slumped to a 27-25 defeat against Hungary in Albertville on Sunday.
Denmark, unbeaten in the group phase, relied on Mikkel Hansen, who scored eight goals, and Lasse Svan (6), while Hungary keeper Roland Mikler made a series of decisive saves.
It was the first time since 2005 that Denmark had been eliminated before the quarter-finals of a major tournament.
Hungary will take on Norway for a place in the semi-finals.
Hosts France, the defending champions who beat Iceland 31-25 on Saturday, will face Sweden who, looking for their first major title since 2002, demolished Belarus 41-22.
