Golden day for GB at Judo Open

The 18-year-old beat London 2012 bronze medallist Automne Pavia of France in the final of her first senior world ranking event.

After a hard-fought contest, the fight went to golden score, with the British judoka throwing Pavia for a waza-ari to seal victory - a surreal experience for the Scot.

"It hasn't really sunk in at the moment but it's amazing to be finally on top of the podium at an event," she said.

"I just took each fight as it came, I had no expectations whatsoever which I think is one of the reasons I did so well today."

Steele had previously beaten compatriot Malin Wilson in the semi-final, who was eventually defeated by the Portuguese Wilsa Gomes in the bronze-medal match.

But Steele was not the only Brit to top the podium in Saturday’s action.

Edinburgh youngster Alexander Short threw Spaniard Adrian Nieto Chinarro for ippon inside just 44 seconds to take gold in the -66kg contest.

The fight fell in stark contrast to his quarter and semi-finals, both of which went to golden score as he defeated Andrej Klokov of Lithuania and Kenneth Van Gansbeke from Belgium respectively.

The result brought Short his first medal in a European competition after he had previously fought in Glasgow two years ago, and the 21-year-old was understandably delighted. "I can't believe it. It's a really, really good feeling," he said.

"I wasn't really expecting it today. It's nice to have something to show for all the hard work I've been putting in."

Sunday’s competition will be the second and final day in Glasgow, with seven weight categories in action.
