Nine medals for GB Judo at Cancun Grand Prix

The team won four silver and five bronze medals over the three-day meet in Mexico.

On Sunday, Ben Fletcher won silver in the -100kg, his first such medal at a Grand Prix event since winning the same colour in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in 2015.

The 25-year-old Bath judoka was beaten to the gold by Israel's Peter Paltchik – the latter claiming victory with a late waza-ari score.

And Philip Awiti-Alcaraz ensured a second British presence on the -100kg podium by claiming bronze. Despite losing to Paltchik, Awiti-Alcaraz beat Chilean Thomas Briceno and Jacob Andrews to set up a bronze medal clash with Jose Armenteros.

However, the Cuban was injured from his earlier bout with Fletcher and could not compete.

Elsewhere, Natalie Powell claimed her 15th career Grand Prix medal with silver in the -78kg, losing to double Olympic bronze medallist Mayra Aguiar of Brazil.

Sarah Adlington won bronze in the -78kg, her first Grand Prix medal for three years, after her scheduled clash against Rochele Nunes was cancelled due to an injury to the Brazilian.

Sunday's performances added to the five medals already won by British fighters earlier in the tournament.

McKenzie secured GB Judo's first podium finish of the games, when he claimed bronze in Friday's bout with Adonis Diaz in the -60kg.

McKenzie's first Grand Prix medal for more than a year was followed by four more medals for Great Britain on Saturday.

Olympic bronze medallist Sally Conway scooped silver in the -70kg bout, following on from silver two weeks ago in Budapest, in only her second competition since the Rio 2016 Games. Gemma Howell joined her on the podium for Britain after winning bronze.

Amy Livesey won silver in the -63kg, while Lubjana Piovesana took bronze.

British Judo Association Elite Performance Coach Kate Howey said: "Overall we have had a good tournament and have come away with nine medals which is pretty impressive from a Grand Prix.

"We now have to get back into training and finish preparation for the World Championships at the end of August."
