Luca Anselmi ultimately won the final race of the season at the Italian track, but it was the battle between Campani and his title rival Niklas Lilja that was the centre of attention.
Campani, still just 23, entered the final run-out of the season just six points ahead of Lilja, who had kept alive his hopes of glory with victory in race one earlier in the weekend.
And the destination of the trophy was only known after the race had ended with Campani taking the chequered flag ahead of Lilja, only for stewards to penalise both drivers, handing victory to Anselmi, who finished in third.
Lilja sets up thrilling finale with race one win at Monza
Campani was bumped down to second and Lilja to fourth, meaning the Italian ended the season 13 points ahead of his Swedish rival.
Anselmi's victory on the day secured him third place overall in the National ACI / CSAI Abarth Selenia Trophy Italy.
With 22 Abarth on the starting grid of the 2014 season's last race, Lilja took the lead from pole, under pressure from Campani, Manuel Buffoli and Anselmi.
During the third lap, Buffoli attacked Campani and overtook him, and then the two frontrunners continue to fight it out until lap eight when Buffoli, trying to overtake Lilja, went off the track at the Variante Ascari.
The duel between Campani and Lilja intensified at this point, with a continuous exchange of positions that also included Anselmi before too long.
On lap 10 Campani tried to overtake Lilja with a late braking manoeuvre at the first chicane entrance. Lilja did the same thing at the same point one lap later, taking the lead again and resisting the assaults of Campani until the very last lap, when the Italian took advantage of the inside line, passing his rival again and crossing the finish line first - with a 141 milliseconds advantage.
But their battle had consequences and at the end of the race marshals altered the ranking, promoting Anselmi to race winner.
Third place went to Eric Scalvini.
In the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse class, 19-year-old Finn Jusso Pajuranta celebrated a magnificent 2014 season, in which he won two titles and many race victories. He was followed by Matteo Arrigosi and Franco Cimarelli.
