The 2005 Gambling Act states that there is a £5 stake limit per person and £100 per pub a day.
According to statute then the biggest event possible is 20 players at £5 each a day but breweries and landlords are risking their licenses by ignoring that limit.
Steve Beasant of North East Lincolnshire Council told Poker News: "Landlords and licensees should be aware of their responsibilities when it comes to the law of the land. Hosting a poker night might pull in the punters but it's important to stick to the law".

Dave Ulliott, one of the most successful poker players in Britain, has opened a new £200,000 Scarborough betting shop.
"Devilfish" Ulliott, who was a minor figure in the Hull underworld but went on to become a World Series of Poker bracelet winner and a mainstay of televised poker, cut the ribbon at Opera House Bet.
He said: "It's an honour to be opening the betting shop and I hope it's a success. It's a lovely place and nice and homely. I like Scarborough because it's a nice place with nice people."
As part of the opening ceremoney there was a poker tournament in the casino.

A short stacked Decorn went All-In with King, eight against the Ace, seven of Coy and got no help from the board as the man from Galway won the title.
