After a disappointing first day that saw them lose two of their three pool games and only sneak into the Cup quarter-finals, England hit form at just the right time on Sunday.
Australia were dispatched handily in the quarter-finals, Charlton Kerr bagging a double, to put them into the final four.
There they found Fiji too tough to handle in a 26-12 defeat, but they saved their best for last in beating the USA 28-7 to claim third – Dan Norton and Mike Ellery with the pick of the tries.
The USA are the overall series leaders but their advantage at the top has been trimmed after South Africa produced a stunning comeback from 19-0 down to beat Fiji in the final.
USA lead Fiji by three points with New Zealand 12 further back, South Africa in fourth and England fifth.
There was disappointment for Scotland however, as they slipped to a 22-19 defeat in the Challenge Trophy final to France.
They beat rivals Wales in the semi-finals but after a weekend that also saw them down Fiji in pool play, it was ultimately a case of what might have been.
