Stoch makes history to complete Four Hills grand slam

Stoch becomes only the second man to complete the improbable Four Hills grand slam.

The 30-year old, who will be defending his two Olympic titles in PyeongChang next month, was mobbed by team-mates after his nerveless victory in Bischofshofen.

The Four Hills tournament, with stops in Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen between Christmas and New Year, began in 1949.

And, in all those years, the legendary German Sven Hannawald is the only man to have completed a clean sweep of all four stops, back in 2002.

"This is an amazing moment for me and also all of my team and coaches, I'm just so surprised, happy and tired, it means so much," said Stoch.

Stoch, who won at Bischofshofen 12 months ago to win last year's overall Four Hills title, was carried on the shoulders of his team-mates to the delight of the thousands who packed the stands, many waving Polish flags after driving through the night to witness what they hoped would be history in the making.

He was also greeted by Hannawald, who left his position in the Eurosport commentary box to pay tribute to the two-time world champion before he collected the golden eagle trophy.

Norway's Anders Fannemel claimed his second top three of the tournament in second while Germany's Andreas Wellinger completed the podium.

In the overall standings they reversed those positions to finish third and second respectively, Japan’s Junshiro Kobayashi dropping to fourth.

Stoch now boasts a 22 point lead in the large hill World Cup rankings ahead of Germany's Richard Freitag, who fell during the Innsbruck stop and picked up a hip injury that could jeopardise his Olympic hopes in South Korea next mont
