The German skier produced jumps of 132m and 133.5m in Nizhny Tagil to take top spot with a total of 275.7 points, a more than decent effort given the tough conditions.
He was joined on the podium by a familiar face as Richard Freitag – who took gold on Saturday – secured silver, while Austria’s Stefan Kraft was third.
And Wellinger is hopeful performances like these can have a knock-on effect on the rest of the year having produced a better performance than he could have hoped for.
"I'm extremely satisfied, I had two pretty amazing jumps," he said.
"I think that, especially in the first round, the conditions were not that easy, but I noticed that it worked well at the take-off and that makes flying easier.
"This result is very important for the next competitions because it gives me confidence to know that I can show what I'm capable of in the competition.
"We have a good team spirit, we trained well and we push each other right now."
Jumps of 131m and 138m from Freitag actually produced a higher total distance than Wellinger’s, though the difficult conditions the 22-year-old faced saw points adjusted in his favour.
He was close to having full German representation on the podium too with Markus Eisenbichler in fourth, only 0.3 points behind Kraft.
The World Cup continues next weekend with competition in Titisee-Neustadt, with the Germans looking to profit from home snow.
