Judd Trump advances to English Open quarter-finals with redemption win over Thepchaiya Un-Nooh

Judd Trump got revenge following his Scottish Open exit at the hands of Thepchaiya Un-Nooh by knocking the Thai out of the English Open to reach the last eight. Trump won 4-2 as he looks to win the English Open for the second time. Elsewhere in Essex, Neil Robertson defeated Ryan Day 4-2 to join Trump in the quarter-finals, with Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy playing each other later on Thursday.

Judd Trump edged past Thepchaiya Un-Nooh 4-2 to reach the English Open quarter-finals, as Neil Robertson beat Ryan Day at the Brentwood Centre in Essex.

Trump was not at his scintillating best but will still enjoy the win after Thepchaiya knocked him out on a re-spotted black at the Scottish Open earlier in December, a defeat he described as "shocking".

Both players squandered opportunities to take the early advantage in a lengthy opening frame which Trump eventually wrapped up to take the lead, but Thepchaiya recovered quickly with only the pink ball depriving him of a total clearance as he made 129 in the second.

Thepchaiya would have walked away from the third frame kicking himself after he miscued an effort down on the black, having earlier got amongst the balls with a fine effort from distance. With both players looking much sharper than they did in the opening stages, Trump took advantage again with a knock of 72 and led 2-1.

The Thai star looked to mount a comeback with another strong start in the fourth frame but he missed the green to left-middle which triggered a dip in form as Trump began to take control by opening up a two-frame cushion.

Thepchaiya found his rhythm in the next frame to give himself a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals, doing more than enough to reduce the deficit to a single frame, but a fourth frame in a fairly satisfactory match for Trump wrapped up the win.

Robertson also reached the quarter-finals with a 4-2 victory over Day, with Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy hoping to join them when they play each other later on Thursday evening.

Ronnie O'Sullivan's conqueror Martin Gould fell at the very next hurdle as Ashley Hugill eased through their match 4-1, while three-time world champion Mark Williams progressed with an impressive 4-2 win over Barry Hawkins.
