Trump triumphed 5-3 to set up a mouth-watering showdown with 'the Magician' Shaun Murphy on Saturday for a place in the final.
The Northern Ireland Open champion raced into a 2-0 lead with breaks of 55 and 101 - but the whitewashing was over when Carrington began his fightback.
The world number 42 levelled at 2-2 with a break of 63 and forced Trump to produce some champagne snooker to get the job done. A break of 117 in the fifth frame created some daylight, but Carrington fought back to 4-3 to stay in contention.
Further breaks of 64 and 119 in the eighth frame ensured there would be no upset, and Trump told Eurosport after his victory: "I think it was a typical 'me' performance.
"In spells I was brilliant and in spells I was terrible. I was thinking about getting a 147 than just trying to win the frame.
I chucked another frame away trying to play a safety and created problems for myself. I was lucky that my brother was here to just calm me down.
"He told me it wasn't as bad as I was making out. He said it's only a mistake if I don't win the match, so he just calmed me down.
"When you're on your own you can let it get to you. But I went there after the interval and just thought of it as 0-0. I think that's the best way to go. I managed to dig myself out of a hole."
The world number five will now face Murphy in the second of the semi-finals, with Mark Allen taking on Daniel Wells in the first of the last four clashes.
Wells, who only progressed to the last 64 after Ronnie O'Sullivan's withdrawal from the tournament, proved too strong for Ryan Day in the other quarter-final of the evening at the Emirates Arena.
He opened the tournament as a 500/1 shot to win the event, but after edging the first three frames 2-1, he produced breaks of 76, 54 and 71 to canter to victory.
It will be Wells' first ever ranking event semi-final, and the player himself admits the O'Sullivan walkover has acted as a catalyst for his success.
He said after his 5-1 win over Day: "It feels very good. Obviously, I'd like to go forward in the tournament, and I'm delighted to reach the one-table set-up.
"I'm free-rolling, really. I was pretty embarrassing in the UK Championships. I saw I had Ronnie and I gave myself very little chance. I was thankful that he didn't go to be honest! I know I'm going to have to be at the top of my game if I'm going to beat Mark."
