Judd Trump beats Jamie Clarke 4-1!

He meets Pengfei or Gudong next.

Trump 3-1 Clarke (51-54)

Judd makes it look easy ... can he get rid of the black?

Trump 3-1 Clarke (40-54)

Jamie slides around the back of the green, close to the side, Judd drains it with a good pot, and this looks like the match. He removes brown, and is just working out how to get from blue to pink, which is a thin cut away from left-middle...

Trump 3-1 Clarke (29-54)

Eeesh, Judd's only gone and snookered himself on the last red! The black is punkt in the road, a poor snooker follows, and Jamie gets in. He's got to see off the green, avec rest, to clinch the frame, but doesn't get that near; Judd needs all the balls to tie, so tries a snooker.

Trump 3-1 Clarke (4-47)

Oh Jamie! Upset he's not on the pink as well as he'd hoped, he misses it to right-corner, and that might be that. The reds aren't perfect, but they might be good enough.

Trump 3-1 Clarke (3-30)

A huge red from Jamie gets him away but he doesn't catch the pack full enough off the blue, and an error hands Judd a starter ... that he misses to left corner, by a distance. Jamie then pokes home nicely with the rest, gets on the black, and this is a chance!

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 4-1 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 3-3 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-4 Zhou Yuelong
  • Jimmy Robertson 0-4 Mark J Williams
  • Joe Perry 1-2 Neil Robertson
  • Ding Junhui 0-0 Joe O'Connor

Trump 3-1 Clarke

Judd isn't playing well, but he's nearly home.

Trump 2-1 Clarke (49-17)

Judd's given up loads of chances, but he's not going to this one slip, I don't think - though as I type that, he gets another kick on the pink and has the ball cleaned. He's still alright, though, sending another pink to the green pocket, and will be able to drop in behind a side-cushioned red off the black.

Trump 2-1 Clarke (20-17)

But he can't make it count, missing a different red by a distance, and soon after Judd is back in with balls everywhere.

Trump 2-1 Clarke (6-6)

Judd fouls, getting nowhere near whichever red he hoped to land on, and Jamie has the simple task of bagging that red that's still over the pocket from when Judd missed it earlier.

Trump 2-1 Clarke (6-1)

Judd nails a fine red to right corner and gets on nowt, but he's soon back in developing the black; can he find one tricky red, then take advantage of his good work? He can't, and off his safety, Jamie gets one to right corner, but he wasn't confident about it because he brought the white back to baulk, meaning he's on nowt ... but Judd is ... but he misses a simple pot, leaving it... but he somehow gets cover from another red! This match is a bit of a mess.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 4-1 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 3-3 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-4 Zhou Yuelong
  • Jimmy Robertson 0-3 Mark J Williams
  • Joe Perry 1-2 Neil Robertson

Trump 2-1 Clarke

Yup, 31 and the frame. Can Judd take control from here?

Trump 1-1 Clarke (57-11)

This isn't vintage from Judd, and trying to ease a pink to right corner, he gets a kick - he still uses the old chalk, of course - and Jamie thinks he's a red that goes. It's tight to get it past a different red, and the far knuckle doesn't finish the job for him. I'd expect Judd to make the frame safe from here.

Trump 1-1 Clarke (6-11)

A double-kiss from Jamie hands a smarting Judd a chance, but he misses to left-middle and now it's the underdog in with the black available to both corners. But he misses to the green pocket - by plenty - and doesn't get the white back far enough, so Judd cuts back the one at the bottom of the cluster. There are points to be had here.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 4-1 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 3-3 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-4 Zhou Yuelong
  • Jimmy Robertson 0-3 Mark J Williams
  • Joe Perry 1-1 Neil Robertson

Trump 1-1 Clarke

And Jamie flukes a double off the top cushion and into the green pocket! This game!

Trump 1-0 Clarke (42-44)

Judd doesn't even attempt the black, instead sticking Jamie behind it off the pink. He'll have to go some to hit and get safe ... and he just about manages. Judd, though, deliberately overcuts the pink, knocking black towards right corner, and this is now a pink-ball frame.

Trump 1-0 Clarke (33-44)

Jamie doesn't replace Judd after a foul, takes on a risky one instead, and leaves it over left corner for Judd. He drains it, then develops the pink while laying a snooker; Jamie hits nicely. So Judd goes again and this time Jamie almost flukes it but instead leaves it, and this time there are balls available; the only thing that can save Jamie, most probably, is the black near the side corner....

Trump 1-0 Clarke (21-40)

A fine pot to the middle sets Judd away again and a blue follows, but trying to develop one of the two remaining reds of the third-last, both of which are on cushions, he instead goes in-off. The frame remains in the balance.

Trump 1-0 Clarke (15-36)

Off the blue, Jamie gets a kiss he wasn't after so has a tricky red from the side ... and he sinks it well. But eventually he runs out of position and Judd psyches himself up prior to addressing a long starter that might give him a frame-winning opportunity. He creams it to left corner, but overruns the white just a tad so has no choice but to lay a snooker between brown and yellow. Jamie's escape is both good and bad - he doesn't hit the red he was aiming for, but he does get the white safe.

Trump 1-0 Clarke (14-4)

No, it costs him just one, but Judd is in again immediately when Jamie misses, but the table isn't an easy one, lots of reds blocking each other ... and he misses an easy one with the red!

Trump 1-0 Clarke (1-4)

Judd misses one hard to right corner but Jamie can only leave one in left. If Judd can drain a taxing cut-back black, he's in ... but it won't go down for him, so this is a chance for Jamie instead. He breaks the pack, developing pink in the process, but cueing awkwardly he misses one he shouldn't, and that might cost him.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 4-1 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 2-2 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-4 Zhou Yuelong
  • Jimmy Robertson 0-1 Mark J Williams
  • Joe Perry 0-0 Neil Robertson

Trump 1-0 Clarke

Judd makes hard work of it, but he gets there in the end, the green sealing the deal.

Trump 0-0 Clarke (51-22)

Jamie cobbles together a run that gets him back into the frame, then sends a nice cut-back down the side and has the black available and two remaining reds in play ... only to miss the blue! Oh, James! If Judd takes the red he's been left with blue or pink, James will need snookers.

Trump 0-0 Clarke (45-0)

Judd eases a starter to right-middle - that's very nicely done - but he soon finds himself on the left cushion and can't clip to right corner from there. But no matter: he takes on another, much harder ball, to the same pocket and absolutely mashes it home, only to finish on nowt. So he knocks the black safe and is a strong favourite for the frame.

Trump 0-0 Clarke (36-0)

Of course, the second I type that Judd misses a black to right corner

Trump 0-0 Clarke (35-0)

Judd gets away with a red rammed diagonally to right corner. Shot! Him nailing one like that so soon suggests he's feeling alright, dodgy tip or not, and already this looks like the frame.

We go again

Coming up next

Judd Trump v Jamie Clarke

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 4-1 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 2-1 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-4 Zhou Yuelong

Gary speaks

He says he doesn't generally feel confident and comfy at the table because he worries about his action - I'd never have guessed that watching tonight and he sayds that when he watches himself he doesn't think he looks it either.

Gary Wilson beats Ronnie O'Sullivan 4-3!

A terrific 73 seals the deal, and if he plays like that for the remainder of the week, he can win this. He meets Vafaei or Bingtao next.

O'Sullivan 3-3 Wilson (0-55)

Garrance is navigating this chance really well, with no fuss - just wise shot-selection and calm shot-execution. He's resolving a complex table like Ronnie, and there's no greater compliment than that.

O'Sullivan 3-3 Wilson (0-8)

Now then. Ronnie misses to left corner and Gary has a chance. The reds aren't nicely positioned, but enough are free for him to put a big dent in this frame.

O'Sullivan 3-3 Wilson (0-1)

This is t-e-n-s-e. Ronnie misses a cut-back, then we have a riveting exchange of cunning safety.

O'Sullivan 3-3 Wilson (0-1)

Gary might be wondering how he's here: the frames he's won have been quick kills, whereas Ronnie's won scrappy ones that might've gone t'other way. Anyhow, he's at the table now after both men miss long reds, almost going in-off his starter, and on nothing, he plays safe.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 2-1 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 1-1 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-3 Zhou Yuelong

O'Sullivan 3-3 Wilson

For the third time tonight, Ronnie comes from behind, and we've got through at least twice as many frames as the other three matches in progess.

O'Sullivan 2-3 Wilson (65-27)

But Ronnie's canon to separate a pair of reds doesn't come off, so he tries to send one into the yellow pocket and misses, then Gary goes in-off playing I've no idea what. This time, Ronnie clips his longun into the heart of the bag, when he plays the cannon is works nicely, and we're having waselves a decider. This has been a very good match.

O'Sullivan 2-3 Wilson (42-27)

From tight to the side, Gary sneaks past the black and caresses a red to left corner - he's been totally unflustered tonight, and he's a strong favourite to take f&m at this visit ... but as I type that, he overcuts one with the rest, offering Ronnie a clear-up! That will be stinging him something fierce!

O'Sullivan 2-3 Wilson (41-15)

Ronnie gets in at the start of frame six and the black has clear paths to both corners. He'll have to dig into the pack soon, though, and how well that goes may well determine the frame. And have a look! He pots the black, cannons the bunch, and the one he hits goes into right-middle! This Gazzler's chance and doesn't he know it! He fairly leaps out of his chair!

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 2-0 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 1-1 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-3 Zhou Yuelong

O'Sullivan 2-3 Wilson

On 82, Gary misses a cut-back red, but the important work is done and he's a frame away from ejecting the greatest.

O'Sullivan 2-2 Wilson (0-47)

So far, he's doing nicely, and he'll know this is a really good chance for him to beat TMNTPETPUAC. He's cueing well, feeling confident, and Ronnie is a bit off it.

O'Sullivan 2-2 Wilson (0-9)

Gary leaves a cut-back to left corner and Ronnie not only misses it, he leaves a chance. Can Garold capitalise?

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 1-0 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 1-1 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-2 Zhou Yuelong

O'Sullivan 2-2 Wilson

Ronnie secures the frame and after 55 minutes we're all-square. I wonder if Gary will regret spurning the chance to take that one when the match is over.

O'Sullivan 1-2 Wilson (54-13)

A missed pot apiece, Gary then Ronnie, allows Gary to jam in behind one and send it along the baulk cushion to the yellow pocket. That's great work, but a poor positional shot means he's to address black with rest, he leaves it, and that'll be the frame.

O'Sullivan 1-2 Wilson (40-8)

Ronnie rockets - geddit? - the green, it jumps out its own pocket and goes in the yellow. But he can't follow it up with a long red, so we're now playing safety.

O'Sullivan 1-2 Wilson (21-8)

Gary attempts a long starter to left corner and misses it, but Ronnie profits to the tune of just one. No matter: Gary's first error allows him in, and already this looks like 2-2; Ronnie knows he needs to take care, because if he doesn't he'll be punished.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 1-0 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 0-1 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-1 Zhou Yuelong

O'Sullivan 1-2 Wilson

A tremendous shot drains the yellow and liberates the green - Neal absolutely loves it. A missed blue ends the run at 83, but this is a really good game.

O'Sullivan 1-1 Wilson (1-59)

Gary takes on a plant, with the rest, though the two balls aren't proximate either to each other or right corner. He's full of confidence and this is going be the lead again.

O'Sullivan 1-1 Wilson (1-29)

A fine long red keeps the break going, and though Gary has to play safe thereafter, he does so well and forces the error, meaning he's now back at the table in a good position to build a handy lead.

O'Sullivan 1-1 Wilson (1-19)

Ronnie floats the white up the table and bags to right corner, but doesn't get a good white so tucks in behind the blue, which has mooched up towards the baulk line. Then he goes at another and misses; it goes the length of the table before settling not far from the side ... and with the rest, Gary cuts it in. That's really well done and he's looking really good out there.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 1-0 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 0-0 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-0 Zhou Yuelong

O'Sullivan 1-1 Wilson

Ronnie and Gary share a laugh at the balls are re-racked, and this on a boil.

O'Sullivan 0-1 Wilson (60-0)

This is good from Ronnie, of course it is. I was wrong about the black - he does without it, making do instead with blues and pinks; as Neal says in co-comms, he knows that if he's to win this match he's to play "proper snooker". A fine red to left corner makes the frame safe, and both men look in decent nick.

O'Sullivan 0-1 Wilson (9-0)

Ronnie plays a decent safety, blocking off the middle of the table, so Gary tries to nestle on one. But he doesn't get the contact right, leaving one to right-middle ... and, as it turns out, a cut-back to right corner. He despatches the latter, and though the black isn't yet available, he has a way of making that happen.

Around the tables

  • Mark Selby 0-0 Robert Milkins
  • Anthony McGill 0-0 Scott Donaldson
  • Barry Hawkins 0-0 Zhou Yuelong

Results from earlier

  • Chen Zifan 0-4 Jamie Jones
  • Kyren Wilson 4-3 Matthew Stevens
  • Stephen Maguire 4-1 Ashley Hugill
  • Xu Si 3-4 Xiao Guodong

O'Sullivan 0-1 Wilson

Eleven minutes, 72 points, and that's a great start from Gary.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Wilson (0-38)

Gary is a proper player - he's reached two ranking finals, one world semi-final, and is 31 in the world, so if he's on, he'll give Ronnie a proper game. And he gets in first with a fine pot, picking off loose reds than clouting one long into the green pocket. the black is still tied-up, so there's work to be done before the frame's at his mercy, but he's in a decent spot.

And off we go!

Evening all

Not just one genius but two: Ronnie then Judd (and with a serious quantity of other brilliant players sprinkled in). On we go!

Righto, that's us done for the afternoon

Join me again this evening, at 6.45pm GMT for a spot of Ronnie followed by a helping of Judd.

Mark speaks

He knows he didn't play that well, and he's someone who needs and wants a lot of time on the practice table, so he has to try and get that. He and the people around him think he needs a break and he'd probably have binned this competition were it not late doors and bad for the sponsors - he didn't want his first act as UK champ to be a pull-out. The bonuses, he reckons, are quite compelling - "You need the ranking points!" jokes Ronnie - and he explains the conflict between not feeling ready to compete, and wanting to see if he can keep his winning run going.

Mark Allen beats Martin Gould 4-2!

He finishes with a ton, a total clearance of132 to be precise, and though he didn't play that well, he played well enough - not many can beat him in this form. He meets Thepchaiya Un-Nooh next, and that match should be a lot of fun.

Allen 3-2 Gould (58-0)

Mark is doing what top players do, rebounding from disappointment and making the most of good fortune. He's nearly there.

Allen 3-2 Gould (23-0)

Mark hits a nice starter, misses a blue to left-middle ... only to double it in the opposite bag! He makes his way to the black spot, a controlled split puts him in good position, and this is another chance to finish things off.

Around the tables

  • Chen Zifan 0-3 Jamie Jones
  • Kyren Wilson 3-2 Matthew Stevens
  • Stephen Maguire 4-1 Ashley Hugill
  • Xu Si 3-4 Xiao Guodong

Allen 3-2 Gould

WHAT?! Mark plays the difficult brown to blue and, match over, clobbers the pink ... misses it, goes in-off, and suddenly Martin just needs an easy pink to make close again! Down it goes, and y days, Mark will rue that shot if he winds up losing this! This game!

Allen 3-1 Gould (36-52)

Ach, good work from Martin to clear to the final red, but then he overcuts with the rest and that looks a lot like curtains. He's played alright today, but just hasn't been able to do enough to get over the line when in a strong position.

Allen 3-1 Gould (35-15)

Have a look! Martin caresses home a lovely starter to left corner, misses his planned cannon off the black ... but gets another. This is a chance for him to draw to within one, but he'll need to pot better than he has so far this afternoon.

Allen 3-1 Gould (35-0)

Mark runs out of position, eases a brown into the yellow pocket ... but winds up on nowt. His scoring hasn't been great today, but he's in a very strong position - though with a touching-ball safety to work out.

Allen 3-1 Gould (13-0)

Mark's in first following another safety error from Martin. He can only manage five, but a further error, with reds now splayed all over, makes this a pretty good chance for him to take f&m.

Around the tables

  • Chen Zifan 0-2 Jamie Jones
  • Kyren Wilson 3-1 Matthew Stevens
  • Stephen Maguire 3-1 Ashley Hugill
  • Xu Si 3-4 Xiao Guodong

Allen 3-1 Gould

A superb red nicked thin along the bottom rail keeps the run going - after a scrappy start, he's right there now - and the pink gives him a flat 100, the black adding the exclamation mark. Great stuff, and Mark is one away.

Allen 2-1 Gould (76-4)

Mark's break-building hasn't been as devastating as usual in his last couple of matches, but he's rousting through this one, and with the frame safe, he'll be ton-hunting.

Allen 2-1 Gould (37-4)

An bad error from Martin, playing a regulation safety, leaves Mark in and he'll be fuming at that: handing an easy starter to the world's form-player. Mark soon plays a poor positional shot - not often you see him lose the white - but another poor safety from Martin has him creaming a red to the green pocket, and this is a good chance for 3-1.

Around the tables

  • Chen Zifan 0-1 Jamie Jones
  • Kyren Wilson 2-1 Matthew Stevens
  • Stephen Maguire 3-0 Ashley Hugill
  • Xu Si 3-4 Xiao Guodong

Allen 2-1 Gould

Mark stays in his seat. This is getting interesting.

Allen 2-0 Gould (12-65)

Martin eases in a lovely starter from centre to left corner, and this is a good chance for him to get on the board; he runs out of position on the final red, but I doubt Mark returns to the table...

Allen 2-0 Gould (12-45)

This is good from Martin, and though he doesn't get a great cannon when starting work on the tricky reds, he's red on. It wriggles into right corner, just, but was played without much confidence and he winds up on nowt. His lead is alright, but he'll have to do a lot more to win this frame.

Allen 2-0 Gould (12-7)

Lovely again from Mark, taking a starter from left side to right corner. He's soon on the black, and digs into the pack from underneath ... only to overcut the pot! He leaves one to right-middle - and insurance to the green pocket - so Martin must make this count. He's been in first in both frames one and two, and has nothing to show for it.

Around the tables

  • Chen Zifan 0-0 Jamie Jones
  • Kyren Wilson 1-1 Matthew Stevens
  • Stephen Maguire 2-0 Ashley Hugill
  • Xu Si 3-4 Xiao Guodong

Allen 2-0 Gould

Of course he can! The frame was again scrappy, but Mark again claimed it in style, on the pink. He is on a such a buzz

Allen 1-0 Gould (49-46)

And Mark wins it seeing away the yellow then ramming a green down the side and into its own pocket. That's a tremendous pot, but can he sink the difficult frame-ball, the pink into left corner?

Allen 1-0 Gould (35-46)

Martin feathers the final red into the middle and adds a black, but he can't get on the yellow so the chase is on.

Allen 1-0 Gould (35-38)

Martin despatches two of the three reds, but a fine safety from Mark gives him a problem; he solves it well, a felicitous cannon off the pink leaving the target-ball on black cush.

Allen 1-0 Gould (35-29)

This is very good from Mark, who plays an excellent cut-back red to left corner. He sends the black down the table in the process, though, and of the three remaining reds, two are stuck together, so he plays safe looking to get in behind that black. You can almost taste the patience.

Allen 1-0 Gould (10-29)

It's Martin in first again and he sends a terrific red long to the yellow pocket ... then digs into the pack off the black, only to miss the pot! How often do we see that? Mark duly chips a starter into left middle, and he's away again, a brown rolling along the cushion, dithering on the edge, and finally dropping. When it's going for you, it's going for you.

Around the tables

  • Chen Zifan 0-0 Jamie Jones
  • Kyren Wilson 0-1 Matthew Stevens
  • Stephen Maguire 1-0 Ashley Hugill
  • Xu Si 3-4 Xiao Guodong

Allen 1-0 Gould

A fine shot on the blue, after finishing low, allows him to clear up and that was a great frame from him showcasing all his new presence at the table. He's won the last two ranking tournaments, and if he keeps playing like this he's a serious shot at a third.

Allen 0-0 Gould (46-42)

Mark eliminates all of the aforementioned tricky reds, plays safe, and is immediately back in. He was always a fine player, but he's so confident and settled now that you don't doubt for a second his ability to remove the colours and go in front.

Allen 0-0 Gould (22-42)

Mark's new-found patience allows him to outlast Martin in a protracted safety exchange, but he doesn't play an especially good red, so has to snooker behind the broon; Martin escapes well and Mark taps the table in appreciation. He does, though, get in, and now he's reaping the rewards - but the last three reds are tricky, gathered on or close to black cush.

Allen 0-0 Gould (6-42)

But shortly afterwards he runs into what's left of the cluster and plays safe off the yellow ... then Mark spanks a marvellous starter to left corner. He can't parlay it into much and ends up foul-missing - my computer crashes so I'm not sure how and why. So Martin extends his lead and snookers Mark behind the brown; he plays an excellent escape.

Allen 0-0 Gould (0-30)

Neal concurs that Martin is a proper player, and he can't understand why he's not been at it of late. But he's in immediately and this is a very nice start from him.

Away we go!

Trump 'interested to see' if O'Sullivan goes for 147s 'now I'm catching him'

Judd Trump has effectively sent the eyes emoji to his rival, Ronnie O'Sullivan, after compiling a delightful 147 at the Scottish Open.
Trump hit the eighth maximum of his career on Tuesday afternoon with a stunning break of 147 against Mitchell Mann in the opening frame of their second-round clash, which he ended up winning 4-0.
It is the third 147 of 2022 for the Bristolian after his magnificent maximums at the Champion of Champions and Turkish Masters.
Trump is now just seven competitive maximum breaks away from levelling O'Sullivan's career tally of 15, something not lost on the 33-year-old.
While the Rocket has expressed his lack of interest in attempting 147s due to the lack of prize money on the line for the feat at top events, Trump wondered out loud if he might start to care more than he says he does.
“I always enjoy 147s, they are always super special to me,” Judd Trump told World Snooker Tour as he continued his progression at the event.
“I’ll be trying my best to make them as often as possible. It will be interesting to see, now that I’m catching him [O’Sullivan] up a little bit if he will start really going for them again.
“Any time when someone else is playing and on a maximum, you always tune into the live scores – if someone’s on 72 or 80, you always try to find the TV to watch it.
“It’s always a special feeling, and for my brother and my family there is a lot of hard work that has paid off during the years when it does happen.”

What is the format at the 2022 Scottish Open?

Monday kicks off with the first-round matches still to be played, featuring the top 16 seeds.
After that, there is a straight-knockout format, with games decided on a best-of-seven basis.
The quarter-finals are best of nine, the semi-finals best of 11, and the final is a best-of-17 decider.
