Murphy raced into a 4-0 lead at the break, but was pegged back to 5-4 as Carter recovered well from a shaky start.
The momentum appeared to have swung away from Murphy, but he grapsed a chance in the tenth frame with both hands and racked up an impressive break of 99 to set up a quarter-final against Judd Trump.
"I think 4-0 at the interval was slightly unfair on how the match had gone," Murphy said. "It definitely should have been about two each at the interval I thought, so I was pretty flattered by that.
One impressive element of Murphy's victory was his much-improved safety play, and the 35-year-old said it's something he's been really working on.
"I'm spending a lot of time working on it," he said. "I'm the best safety player in the world at home, I play shots you've never seen, but out there it's a different story.
"I know there are certain styles of shot that I'm weak on, so I spend a long time practicing those, but I have been going out practicing with other players. At home it's like a golfer hitting balls on the range - you just have another go if you make a mistake. But when you're out there picking balls out for another pro you have to walk around the table for ten minutes."
