Top seed Barry Hawkins crashed out at the Snooker Shoot Out to China’s Zhang Anda in the second round.
Hawkins failed to capitalise on a couple of loose shots from his opponent in the 75-0 defeat.
Stuart Bingham won the battle of the former world champions as he defeated Shaun Murphy 72-22.
The 42-year-old looked ecstatic after reaching the third round in Watford at the expense of the fourth seed.
There was drama in the match between Barry Pinches and Ben Woollaston, with the referee needing a replay to determine the latter had potted a match-winning pink illegally in the final second.
After a small delay, Pinches was awarded a 51-44 win.
