The 37-year-old Englishman - a former tractor driver from Tamworth - made the break during his best-of-five frame match with Scotland's Stephen Maguire at Coventry's Ricoh Arena.
It comes 20 years after he turned professional, and is arguably more memorable than reaching two ranking finals, the International Championship in 2015 and last year's World Open.
The world number 19 Gilbert - who lost 10-9 to world champion Mark Williams in the World Open final last August - will go into the history books with his name alongside a unique number, 37 years after Steve Davis made the first televised maximum at the Lada Classic in 1982.
Gilbert's effort comes four days after Ding Junhui almost achieved the feat in his Masters semi-final against Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Ding fluked the final yellow, but missed a green to a centre pocket in falling five balls short at the Alexandra Palace.
